mun LICENSE
None are apparently more interest
in securing high licence than liquor
dealers themselves. Mr. C. Metz,
one of the leading brewers in Omaha,
Neb , in a letter of advice to the trade
in New York, writes under date of
January 20. as follows: ' High li
cense (SIOOO in the cities, and SSOO
in the towns) has been of no injury to
our business VVe are positively cer
tain mat were it not for onr present
high license law Nebraska would to
dav have prohibition. In our opin
ion high license does not lessen the
consumption of liquor. If left to us,
we (the liquor dealers) would never
repeal this law. Tber« are a great
many diffiulties at first for the brew
ers and I'quor dealers to get a high
license law in good working order,
but after a year or two you will cer
tainly find it to your advantage over
prohibition."
The Tribune gives us much food
for thought nowadays. In speaking
of the Kaneas Decisions, it says that
the "bumptiousness and intolerance
of the liquor men, their disregard of
of legislative restrictions, their at
tempted dictation in politics, and their
demoralizing influence on legislative
bodies have been powerful aids to
Prohibition. It advises them, if they
would not see their business destroy
ed, to range themselves definitely in
favor of high license, since "the mod
eration of the advocates of high li
cense stand between the liquor men
and prohibition." This is what we
have always believed but did not
suppose the high license advocates
would acknowledge it.
ROBERT J. BURDETTE OX CONTINENTAL
TEMPERANCE.
If there is one passage in the letters
of American travelers in Europe more
tiresome than another is this: "Dur
ing our six weeks' stay in Paris we
did not see a single drunken person."
Then they travel through Switzer
land, Germany. Austria, Italy aud
Spain, and all France, and still they
do not see a drunken person. They
attribute the sobriety of the people to
the fact that everybody drinks wine
and beer; drink it sll the time, ai.d
lots of it, with no high license and
prohibition nonsen.se to bother them;
eoneequentlv they never get drnuk.
Well, r-ow, the only inference one
can draw from these remarkable let
ters is cither thai the writers them
selves were blind drunk all the time
they were in Paris, or the Parisian
crankard is a most successful bider.
Because while our travelers last year
did not see a single instance of drunk
enness in Paris, the official police
records state that the police ef Paris
saw and arrested, OQ an average, 150
people every day t»etween January
land April 30, for being drank on
on the streets. So many drunkards
are not arrested in New York, aad
yet these travelers of ours always
contrast the sobriety of Europe with j
the excesses of America It is juot j
aa well to bear in mind tbe official re- j
port while reading these letters, and
perhaps if tbo writers drank less and j
thought more they would remember
that official returns will not always j
agree with letters from the guidebook, j

Tbe saloon is a mischievous, mur
derous outlaw and nuisance.
It is the prolific breeder of vices.
It is the corrupter of our boys and
destroyer of ou. •.'.>ung men.
It is the constant inciter of riot and
murder.
It is the brazen insulter of our wo-:
men everywhere.
It is tbe most vicious and malicious
enemy of the home.
It is satan's school house ar.d the !
drill room of devils set over against
our free tchoois and churches.
It is a neat of vipers iu the very
bosom of society.
It is the breeder of mora! malaria
where-ever it comes.
It is a perpetual insult to common
decency, and a continuous outrage ou
public rights, anywhere and every
where it opens its maelstrom of mis
ery and death.
If these things be so—if the saloon
really is a mischievous, murderous
outlaw and nuisance, always and
everywhere, can there be any reason
under the i»un, wby the saloon should
stay ?
A TEN YEARS' Till A L OF HIGH LICENSE.
"High license would bo a great
stride toward the emancipation of so
ciety from the abuses of the liquor
traffic."—Philadelphia Call.
Then prove it by the facts - Wei
have had what is virtually a hiph ,
Federal license on the liquor traffic i
for a good many years. To begin 1
with, there is a 90 cent license on |
eucb gallon of dintilled liquor sold.
About $70,000,000 a year are paid in
that way—un average of $350 to
every saloon. Then there is a 10
cent storage fee on each gallon,
amounting to about $3,000,000 —aa
average of $lO more for each saloon.
Then there is a tux on beer of $1 per
barrel, with o'ffht per cent, discount
if paid in advance. About $14,000,-
000 are paid in this way—an average
of i bout S7O for each HHIOOII Then
there is II special tax of $25 on each

Here there is a license fee of $435,
which ha* been required by the Fed

has been nourished, the evils of tha

you do, and found no relief till my
physician finally prescriOed Dr.

cured me, and 1 have ever since been
