Punctuation in Signs.
A sign painter of this town baa de
dared war against tbe unsightly
punctuation marks which custom re
quireß to be put on all business signs
The custom, he says, is absurd, hav
ing nothing to support it but a super
anuated idea which is founded on u
misconception of the rules of the lan-
guage.
"Of course I know," said he, "thai
the meaning of a sentence is some
times radically changed by leaving
out a punctuation mark or by mis
placing it. but a business sign is an
expression, not a sentence, if I may
pat it that way, and in most of them
commas, colons and periods are abso
lutely useless. W hat harm do they
do? No particular harm, except
sometimes to utterly destroy the
beauty aud symmetry of a sign and
that is something. Here, look at
