A Quaint Epitaph.
In the new cemetery at Sterling,
Scotland, there is a tombstone to the

an late as 1800, has an epitaph a
most qaaiDt aud suggestive illustra

'"Our life is but a winter clay:

How a Haggis is Made.
A Scotch haggis is made of the
lights, liver and heart of a sheep,
which is all called pluck. They
come attached to the wind pipe. Put
it all on to boil, eav for an hour and j
a half. It is well to let the windpipe
end hang over the pot, so that any
impurities may pass out. When
done remove from the fire and allow
the pluck to cool, Then cut awav
the wind pipe, bits of ckin or gristle,
and all but a qua r ter of the liver.
Then add a half pound of beef suet
and chop the whole very fine. Now
! add two small cupfuls of oatmeal
i which has been previously dried in
the oven, pepper, Halt and about halt
a pint of the liquor iu which the
pluck was boiled Now it ia ready
for *he bag, which must have been
procured from the market the day be
fore; it is the large stomach of a
sheep and must be fresh As 60on
as possible wash it well, first in cold
water, then plunge it into boiling
water, and scrape carefully; then it
should be allowed to soak all night
in a pan of salt and water.
When the mince is ready wash the
bag with cold clean wa*er, and only
little more thau half fill it with the
mince, for room must be left for the
meal and meat to expand; if filled,
the bag would burst. Now sew the
bag up securely and put it into a pot
of boiling water, pricking it occasion
ally, as it swells, to allow the air to
escape. If the skin appears very
thin, tie a pudding cloth around it;
boll for three hours; serve hot, with
out gravy or garnish of any klud, as
it ia sufficiently rich of itself.
"Heiress to Millions,"
the newspaper stated, and how many
women, probably, read the same, and
envied her. But little was she to be
envied, however; for in spite of her
great wealth she was miserable. It
was her lot, in common with myriads
of women, to suffer from those
"chronic weaknesses," which are pe
culiar to the female sex. Miserable,
nervous, and discouraged, she would
gladly have given every dollar of her
lortune for one brief installment of
health. llow easy,and how inexpen
hive, would be the journey to health.
lif Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription
was selected as a remedy, and the
of the same persisted in; that is,
the experience of thousands of women
afflicted in the above mannar, teaches
us to predict so. It is the only medi
cine for women, sold bv drutrgists,
under a poultice guarantee, from the
manufacturers, that it will give satis
faction in every case, or money will
be refunded. This guarantee has
been printed on the bottle-wrapper,
and faithfully carried out for many
years

Making Themselves Old.
Shake speare makes Cajsar pay that
cowards die many times before their
deaths And so they do. And so
do thousands upon thousands of per
sons who grunt their lives away
They make themselves old with im
agined aches and pains and anticipat
ed distresses. It is not good to give
way to megrims. Anticipation
brings the misery that it looks for. If
we tbink we are sick we shall l»e sick
If we anticipate decrepitude it will
run to meet us.
