    BUTLER CITIZEN
MIBCE LIAIVEOUH.
What John Chinaman Eats.
It will probably astonish many to
know that three fourths of all the
chickens brought to this market are
consumed by the Chinese, and that
nine tenths of all the tame ducks
brought here share the same fate.
The longer one lives the more h» finds
by jimminT out, and instead of the
Chinaman feasting on rat pie, as he is
popularly supposed to do, he has just
three times as much chicken pie on his
bill of fare aa the white man, and nine
times as much stewed duck.
The Chinaman is peculiar. Geese
or turkeys be does not care for, and
wild ducks or any other game which
bag been shot are an abomination in
his almond-shaped eyes. "Heap like
'em alire" is John's remark when any
dead fowls are ofiVred him. His taste
in fish is also peculiar. He avoids sal
mon, but goes hi? last nickel on suck
ers and sturgeon, of any salt water
fish which has long out of water.
Well, the salmon is a royal fish. It is
death to dogs, and does not seem to
agree with Chinamen. The massive
brain of the Caucasian is the only one
able to cope with and successfully as
similate the phosphorus and pbat of
the luscious Chinook.— Portland Ore
ijoniau.
An English Giant.
At Shiffnal, in the west of England,
there was bnried recently a man of
grand stature named J. L. Stubbs.
His coffin measured 37 inches across
the shoulders, 7 feet in length, and
two feet in depth. It took the united
strength of 10 men to lift it when the
corpse was placed in it. Planks were
placed against the bed room window
and the coffin lowered down to a truck,
and was thus wheeled away to tha
church-yard. The ground was cot
away at the head of the grave to form
an incline, permitting the coffin to
slide into its resting place. The
weight of Mr. Stubbs was about 375
pounds.
He Would Take Chloroform.
A. man went into a barber's shop to be
shaved. Said he in bis gravest manner
to the barber, "Have you that razor
you shared me with the day before
yesterday?" "Ob, yes, sir," replied
the barber, with much exuberance and
delight at the favorable appreciation
and the tender interest evinced in his
instrument, rubbing bis bands and
reaching it down. "Here it is, sir."
"Ah, well," said the visitor, dryly,
after a little hesitation, "then—l'll
take Chloroform, please.
—Photography is now need to de
termine the height and velocity of the
clouds. Two cameras, with instanta
neous shatters to be released simulta
neously by electricity, are placed
almost six hundred feet apart. The
angle of inclination of the cameras and
the position of the clond as photograph
ed on the two plates are measured, and
with these data a trigonometric calcu
lation gives with accuracy the distance
of the clouds.
—The ship canal between the Baltic
Sea and the German Ocean will, it is
estimated, save a journey of COO miles
for a vessel makicg a trip between
either of those waters, as the circumnav
igation of the peninsula of Jutland will
be nneeessary. In all, the proposed
canal will be only some fifty miles—or
about half that of the Suez Canal—
extending from Gluckstadt to Kiel.
—Encouraging: The patient after a
long examination! t seeing the doctor

with me?" "Ah! that we shall see at
the autopsy."
—Of the 2,616,879 pupilp at element

only 204 female pupils out of 12,315.
Expressions of gratitude on the part
of the pablic are always impressive and
solemn. It is pleasant to know that
the people are justly praising the mer
its of Dr. Bull's Congh Syrup, a safe
remedy for coughs, colds, bronchitis,
eronp and sore throat.
—People who sanction the sins of
their rulers share their punishment.
Physicians Prescribe in Epilepsy.

▲ low condition of health is common
with many who allow themselves to
worry. Mental anguish caaaes bodily
suffering?. Anxiety and care has
broken down many constitutions. A
train of disorders usually follow mental
distress. Heart affections, nervousness,
sloeplessnoss, dyspepsia, liver complaint
kidney troubles, etc!, are among the
list. A sure remHy for relieving all
mental and physical distress is Brown's
