Rev, H. 11. Fairall, D. D., editor of
the loica Methodist, Bays editorially,
in tbe November (1883) number of
his paper: "We Lave tested tbe merits
of Ely's Cream Balm, and believe that
by a thorough course of treatment, it
will cure almost every case of catarrh.
Ministers, as a class, are afflicted with
head and throat troubles, and catarrh
seems more prevalent than ever. We
capnot recommend Ely's Cream Balm
too highly, Not a liquid nor a snuff.

When Doctors Disagree
it will be time enough to doubt the re
liability of Kidney-Wort. Doctors all
agree that it iB t> most valuable medi
cine in all disorders of tbe Liver' Kid
neys and Bowels, and frequently
prescribe it. Pr. P. C. Ballou of
Monkton says: "The past year I have
used it more than ever, and with the
best results. It is the mopt successful
remedy I have ever used." Such a
racommendanion speaks for itself. Sold

▲ great many people feel themselves
gradually failing. They don't know
just what is tbe matter but they suffer
from a combination of indescribable
acheß and pains, which each month
seems to grow worse. Tbe only sure
remedy known that will counteract
this feeling and restore perfect health
is Brown's Iron Bitters. By rapid as
similation it purifies tbe blood, drives
oat disease, gives health and strength
to every portion reached by tbe circu
latory system, renews wasted tissues
and restores robust health and strength.

The Highest Education
There is a great deal that is wrong
in onr modern method of education.
It teaches a man to be a gentleman, but
Jet does not give him the power of mak
ig a living. It fetuffis him with facts
and meaningless words, Phrases and
theories, bat does not enable him to
think for hinißelf and become a man in
the highest and best sense. His edu
cation is too general and not practical
enough. All classes should be taught
that Parana—the great remedy com
pounded by Dr. Hartman—is the very
thing he needs for the restoration of
hia health and the toning up of the body.
Being compased of pure vegetables sub
stantes and containing no poisonous
minerals, it is just the thing for all
clauses of people, and all should learn
at once that it is to their interest to
inquire into the merits of this medicine,
for therein lies the highest education.

Remarkable Phenomenon.
Nkw Orleans, Feb. 4 — A remarka
ble physical phenomenon has been ob
served by Capt. W. L. Marshall, of the
United States Engineers, stationed at I
Vicluburg and in charge of river im
provement work at Lake Providence,
La., for the Mississippi River Com
mission. Capt. Marshall, in a report
just made to H. B Harold, of the Com
mission in this city, communicated his
discovery. The statement is as fol
lows: "A few piles have washed out
of the five-row dyke of Myersville
chute. There was a thick foot-mat
and a cubic yard of stone pier running
to the foot of the dyke. A remarka
ble phenomenon is shown here. A
pile five feet longer than the rest, mark
ed to indicate the iront of the dyke at
high water, still remains standing up
right and firm two feet below the lower
row. The drift is arched across the
opening, and there is no pn ssure upon
the pile. It has traveled sixty-two
feet down the stream erect and firmly
imbedod in the sand. Such cases bare
been reported heretofore, but not cred
ited by mo, This case I observed
myself. It can only be accounted for
on the supposition of a bodily move
ment of the sand foundation."
"In other words," s&id Msjor
Harold, "it would deem as if the mate
rial in the trough or bed of the river
was in motion like an Alpine glacier,
which, although a solid river of ice,
winding through the rocky ravines of
the mountains, has an actual progres
sive motion. We may suppose the
mud and sand which make up the de
posit is undergoing bodily translation
like a glacier. Iu no other way as it
appears, can this pile, maintaining its
solid bold in the mud and sand and its
perpendicular position be accounted
for." This phenomenon, while it is
not unknown to sc once, has not here
tofore been observed in connection
with tho Mississippi river.

Permanent Whitewash.
Make the wash in the ordinary man
ner, then place it over the fire and bring
it to a boil. Then stir into each gallon .
a tablespoonful of powdered alum, a
hall pint of good flour paste, a half
pound of glue dissolved in water, while j
it is boiling. The wash, it is said,
nearly equals paint.
Why They Call Him "Old Man."
"Yes, that's sadly so," said Jenkins,
"my hair is turning gray and falling
out before its time. Use something '
I would, but most hair restorers are
dangerous." "True," answered his
friend, "but Parker's Hair Balsam is
as harmless as it is effective. I've
tried it, and know. Give the Balsam
a show and the boys will soon stop
calling you 'Old Man Jenkins.'' It
neyer fails to restore the original color
to grav or faded hair. Richly per
fumed, an elegant dressing.
Mr. Chas. K. Seltyre, Wrightesville,
Pa., says: "I u*ed Brown's Iron Bitters
as a tonic and it did more for me than
I thought it would."
—A rolling paragraph gathers no cred

t&T A correspondent of the Husband
man recommends water impregnated
with gas tar for the purpose of destroy
ing the Colorado beetle on potato
vines. It hps proved more effectual
than Paris green, and has been used
with equal effect on current bushes.
Two quarts of gas tar to a pailful of
water a r e the proportions used' and tha
yines or bushes are sprinkled by means
of a watering-pot.
—The Postmaster General says that
if the bill providing for a post-office
building in every town having 2,500
inhabitants is amended so as to limit
the cost of the building in each case to
$15,000, and provides that they shall
be under the supervision of the Post
master General, he will approve it. Mr.
Hill, the author of the bill, says it will
be so amended and passed.
