    BUTLER, CITIZEN^
MIHCEIJANEOUS.
LITTLE AH SID.
Little Ah Sid
Waa a Chriotura kid—
A cute little cuss, you'd declaie—
With eyes full of fun
And a nose that begun
Bight up at the root ot hi* hair.
Jolly and fat
Was this liollcsotne brat,
As he played through the loug summer day ,
And biaided Mi cue
As his father used to
In Cbinaland, far, far away.
Once oVralawn
That Ah Sid played upon
A humble-bee flew In the spring.
"Melicstn butterfly! '
Said be. with a wlunlng eye,
"Me caU bec and pull oil uu; wiug."
4 Then with his cap
He struck it a rap—
TLis innocent bumble-bee—'
And put its remains
In the seat ot his jeatu ;
For a pocket there had the Chioee.
Down on the green
£at the little sardine
In a style that wu# strangely demure,
And said with a grin
That was brimlul of ain,
•'Me mashce urn butterfly sure."
Little Ah Sid
Was only a kid,
Nor could you expect him to guess
What kind ol » bus
He was holding so snug
In the folds of his loase fltiiug drees
"Ki-ya! Kl-ylp.ye!
Ah Sid cried, as he
Rose hurriedly up troin that spot.
"Ka-yi! Kuk-a-kuti!
Dam um Melican man--
Um butterfly belly much botl"

Remarkable Escape.
John Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., had a very
narrow escape from death. This is his own
story: "One vear ago I was in the last stages
of consumption. Our best physicians gave my
case up. I finally got so low that our doctors
■aid I could not live twenty-four hours. My
friends then purchased a bottle of Dr. Wm.
Hall's Balsam for the lungs, which benefited
me. I continued until I took nine bottles. I

Doctors Disagree.
As a reporter for the Pittsburgh Commercial
Gazette sat (yesterday afternoon) in a chamber
at No. 321 Federal Street, Alleghenv, listening
to a terrible tale of suffering as it fell from the
lips of a gentle little lady, Mrs Milo Ingram,
the daughter ot Capt. McKelvey, of this
citv, it seems almost tco much to l»elieve, if
the evidence iiad not been close at hand to sub
otantiate every word. It was but another evi
dence of the culpable ignorance of a large class
of practitioners of medicine who claimed for
six years that her terrible disrinso was cancer.
She was covered with ulcers, giv-u up to die.

Causes of Baldness.
Dr. Howard in Medical Monthly.]
I wish that our science aud civiliza
tion had better devices for preserving
the integrity of the hair. Baldness is
a deformity"and premature whiteness a
defect. If the head was in health and
the body in proper vigor, I am appre
hensive that our dietetic habits occa
sion the bleaching of the hair; the
stiff, arsenic-prepared bat is responsi
ble for much of the baldness. Our
bats are unhealthy, from the tricks of
the hatters. I suppose there are oth
er reasons, however. Certain diseases
wither the hair at its roots: others low
er the vitality of the skin, and to depil
ate the body.
I acknowledge that the shingled
head disgusts me. It cannot be whole
some. The most sensitive part
of the head is the back, where
the neck joins. That place
exposed to unusual cold or heat,
is liable to receive an injury that will
be permanent, if not fatal, in a short
period. The whole head wants pro
tection, and the hair affords this as no
other protection can. Men have beards
because they need them, and it is wick
ed to cut them off. No growth or part
of the body is superfluous, and we
ought, aB candidates fur health and
long life, to preserre ourselves from
violence or mutilation. Integrity
is the true and manly standard.

—How n.uch of the worriment of life comes
frcm the want of money, or from the hope of
having it! An Irish volunteer heard the sad
news that his mother had married a second

What is Diphtheria.
The name is comparatively new, but the dis
ease is as old as sin itself. It U a condition of
the throat something like cronp, only worse,

The throat is violently iuflamed,
and a tough membrane, like leather, is formed.
Perry Davis's Pain Killer has cured thousands
of cases of diphtheria. It acts so promptly and
so efficiently, that no family can afford to be
without it.
