surance case has just been decided in
New York. Some twenty-five or
thirty years ago a man named Da\ is
insured hip life in the New ork In
surance Company for the benefit of his
wife, and stipulating in tbe policies
that in the event of her death the
money should go to his children.
Mrs. Davis died some years ago, and
subsequently Davis surrendered the
policies to the company upon the pay
ment to him of a certain sum of
money. Meantime Davis' children
had become of age, and alter his death,
which occurred in 1879, they brought
suit to recover the life insurance. The
case has just been decided, the Court
holding that the transfer back to the
fompany of policies was void. Prior
to filing their suit, however, the heirs
of Davis proffered the amount of back
premium due on the policies, which
was refused.

During the last five years about
thirty persons have been killed and
about seventy wounded, on the Gov
ernment side, in the war with illicit
distilling. It is thus evident that
campaigning in this service is about as
sharp soldiering as can be had any
where in time of peace.

large number of men and boats off the
coast of Lower Calfornia. Traders
supply tbe vessels and diving appara
tus upon the stipulation that tbe pearls
thai, are found are to be sold to them
at specified rates. These jewels are of
much beauty and highly prized. A
year's production is on an average from
$500,000 to $1,000,000.
A new scientific wonder is announ
ced from Philadelphia in tbe shape of a
motor that promises to supersede
steam. Vaporized bisulphide of car
bon is the agent employed. The in
ventor asserts with confidence that
under its workings the heat of a com
mon bouse fire can be utilized to suc
cessfully run an ocean steamship, and
adds tbe significant remark that 'there's
millions to it.' He is hunting around
for capitalists.
Two starving men in the busy and
prosperous city of New York stole a
loaf from a baker's wagon and break
ing it in half they devoured it raven
ously. A copper who stumbled upon
tbem bravely "run them in." The
baker appeared against the prisoners
and it was proved that that the law
bad been outraged eveD perchance if
two lives had been saved. They
were sentenced to the Tombs. And
such incidents are said to be common
in tbe great city.
It has been discovered tbatperfumes
exert a bealtby influence on tbe atmos
phere, converting its oxygen into
ozone. Cherry, laurel, clover, laven
per, mint, juniper, fennel and berga
mont develop the largest quantity of
ozone. Flowers without perfume do
not develop it, but tbe flowers of nar
cissus, mignonette, heliotrope and lily
of tbe valley develop it in close vessels.
Odorous flowers,cultivated in marshy
places, would be valuable in 'purifying
the air.
A promiuent gentleman of Geneseo
has been prolonging his life at tbe ex
pense of tbe canine creation. Some
two or three years ago tbe gentleman
in question, who was pronounced by
physicians to be in an advanced stage
of consumption, began the babit of
taking his {-et dog to lied with him.
The dog scon exibited unmistakable
signs of lung difficulty, coughed almost
constantly, and finally died. The
gentleman procured another dog, and
slept w'tb it for a time, when this ani
mal also fell a victim to the disease.
Another dog was procured, with which
the man now sleeps, and though the
third animal will probably die the
same way as *.he others did, the man
is improving and is better than before
in years. Tbe Hornellsville lYibune
says tbat he is a well-known business
man of Geneseo, and that it could give
his name if necessary.

There are several diseases kaown
among farmers as heaves, some curable
and some not, and requiring therefore
veterinary examination before deciding
upon the form of disease and consequent
remedy. Tbe broken-winded horse is
called heavy when the real trouble is
in the throat, some of the muscles of
the larynx being paralyzed. Again, a
horse full fed on dry and musty hay
with no grain often seems badly affect
ed with heaves in starting out, but
after long driving and plenty of drink
appesrs greatly improved. There are
types of the disease which an ordinary
condition powder, and especially one
containing saltpetre, will ameliorate.
Where the trouble is with an excess of
dry hay the feeding of smaller quanti
ties of cot feed, mixed with rye bran,
and tho mixture wet up with warm
water, will often prove of much ser
vice

John English, the proprietor of tbe
livery stable on Ninth street be
tween State and Peach, has been
studying out a new system of shoeing
horses- Mr. English has had years of
experience with horses, and be be
came convinced some years ago that
the putting on a horse's foot of a hot
shoe was wrong. He claims that it
rots the hoof and destroys tbe life in it
to such an extent that a few years of
hard work spoils a horse's foot and
prevents it being shod. How to reme
dy this alleged evil Mr. English com
menced to study, and for two years
and a half be has been constantly ex
perimenting on various horses, until
he has succeeded in obtaining what be
calls a perfect foot, free from all burned
and decaying matter. He maintians
that a hot shoe should never be put on
a horse's foot, and although be has
only finished his researches a few days
ago he has made quite a number of
converts to his new theory, and
within the past few days several
horses have been shod with cold shoes
and the owners say ihey are well sat
isfied with the results. Whether the
blacksmiths, who from time immemo
rial have been accustomed to using the
hot shoe, will have their opinion
changed is a matter of doubt, but Mr.
English has some fine feet on the
horses in his stable tbat it would do
every man interested in horses good to
