Miss Blanche Roosevelt gives tie
following as Longfellow's account of j
bis intervfew with Queen "\ ictoria at
Windsor Castle:
'An imposing lady in black, with
flowing drapery, came quickly forward
to greet me. It was her Majesty
Queen Victoria. She extended her
band and I offered to take it.
'What!' I interrupted, 'did you not
bend and offer to kiss it
'No,' said he timidly, 'I was not
1 then familiar or acquainted with court
etiquette as lam now. She offered
me her baud evidently to shake and I
shook it.'
'Why,' said I, 'she is the most iuex
orable csigeante of all sovereigns.
You must have horrified her.'
'I presume I did,' said be simply.
'Now I think of it, she was disconcert
ed, I suppose for that reason, but she
| rallied graciously, and asked me about
j America and myself. She explained :
I 'We speak of America first, because
you are America's poet. Tennyson
ours.' •
'Tennyson is the world's poet,
madame said I, bowing gravely. She
smiled in gratified acquiescence and
continued:
'You are very generous.'
ller Majesty was then pleased to
converse on general topics, but persis
teutly pot back to the. subject ot myself.
I felt she was piqued about something
at first and her last woris were :
'We shall not forget you,' adding
with a laugh, 'why, even ail my ser
vants read your poems!'
'What do you think she intended by
it?'
'I was nonplussed, and to day. al
though many years b:ive passed, I am
undecided as to what her Majesty's
real meaning was.'— JJoston Traveler.

A skilled hangman is needed while
we maintain capital punishment. The
execution of Leigthon, in New York,
and of R< a, in Pulaski, Term, were
bungling, brutal, torturous violations
of the spirit of the law, and shameful
in the extreme. Death, not torture,
is the lawful punishment of murderers.

A Quaker was once advising a drunk
ard to leave off his habit of drinking
intoxicating liquors. 'Can you tell me
how to do it?' said the slave of the ap
petite. 'Ves' answered the Quaker ;
ft is just as easy as to open thy hand,
friend.' Convince me of that, and I
will promise upon my honor to do as
you tell me,' replied the drunkanl.
'Well, my friend, wlirn thou fin (ley t
any vessel of intoxicating liquor in
thv hand, open the hand that contains
it before it reaches thy mouth, nnd
thou wilt never be drunk again.' The
toper was so pleased with the plain
advice that he followed it and became
a sober man.

A youth to fortune and to fame un

a new play, asking the great dramatist
to become his vollaboraicur. Dumas

sir, purpose to yoke together a horse
and au ass?' The author by return of
post—'How dare you, sir, call me a
horse ?' Dumas, by n< xi mail—'Send

It is simply marvelous how quickly
constipation, biliousness, sick head

sound advice and thoughtful senti-1

An exchange wants ladies to take
off their hats in church, but as long as
half the ladies go to church for the pur
pose of displaying their hats it is hard
ly possible that the suggestion will be
adopped—unless a glass case is placed
along side of the pulpit for their ac
commodation and the name of the
owner is prominently affixed to each
hat.
There is no foundation, in fact for
the proverbial expression of 'Crocodile
Tears.' These reptiles emit loud and
singularly plaintive cries, compared by
some travellers to the mournful howl
ing of dogs. The earlier travellers
would very naturally associate tears
with these cries and, once begun, the
supposition was very readily propaga
ted.
A little girl in Rochester has become
affected with St. Titus dance, which, it
is said, was caused by jumping rope.—
Ex. Medical men say that this is one
of themo3t injurious of exercises, espec
ially for girls, and that it frequently
leads to disease. It is well known
that deaths often occur from over-exer
tion at this amusement, which is one
that should be entirely prohibited by
parents and teachers.
