The Wwk Performed by the ffeatera IJaloa Co. al Cleve land. CLXYKLAND, September 29. —The service of the Western Union Tele graph Company from the arrival of Garfield's remains until the day after the funeral deserves mention. From the 84th to the 21th its facilities were severely taxed, but met the emergency in an exceedingly creditable manner, and such as called forth commendations from newspaper correspondents and all others who had telegraphic busi ness. So well was everything man aged that no error occurred in trans mission, notwithstanding at oDe time on Monday night over fifty thousand words per hour were sent on thirty eight press circuets from thiß office, and the promptness with which busi ness was despatched all who knew the immense amount of work being done. On Saturday, the 24th, 74,852 words were sent; on Sunday, 82,150; on Mon day, the day of obsequies, 155,597 ; total for tnree days 282,599. Four fifths of this matter was transacted between nine at night and midnight. Besides the regular force here twenty fire first claa operators were sent here from Washington, Chicago, Indianap olis, Detroit and Toledo. In the re eeiring and delivery department more than double the ordinary number of messages were received and delivered each dar, without increase of the regu lar force. All the employes took a personal interest in demonstrating that they could meet any emergency. The Beginning of Slcknm. Never trifle with what are called g lP all ailments. This style of swindling seems to be as prevalent as erer, notwithstanding the innumera ble newspaper warnings. [Cfcambentarfh, (Pa.) WHOOPINQ COUGH. —On so extended trial the author, Dr. Caspar Griswold, of this city, finds carbolic acid in whooping cough, in doses of one-fourth minim to a child of six months, one half minim for one of a year, and one minim for one of two years and up ward, to tbe best remedy 'The whoop goes; vomiting ceases; tbe parox ysms are modified in intensity and fre quency.' This result be believes to 'arise from a similar action to that of creosote on tbe motor fibers of the ragus to the stomach and from a low ering of tbe vitality of tbe specific germ of whooping cough disease.' It is a conceded fact that cannot be denied, Per ana is supplanting all other medicines. Two lawyers lately went to prison in Philadelphia for ten years. They are Diekerson and Vanarsdalen, who were convicted of conspiracy in tbe celebrated Whittaker will case. Behold tbe scene in prison when they donned their prison garb. Diekerson tbe white-haired old man, sobbed like a woman, asked for a Bible, and request ed to be set at bard work at once. His companion in crime retained bis nerve, and said that be should resign from tbe bar, and thus Bave tbe associa tion tbe trouble of expelling bim. Both teemed to understand at length that it is well to be honest. If they did not understand it,* tbey bave ton jreara in which to think of this great Astronomy is a beautiful science. We are told that if a railway was ran from tbe earth to the nearest fixed star, and the fare was one penny for every hundred miles, and if you were to take a mass of gold to ibe ticket office equal to tbe national debt—ors3,Boo,ooo,ooo —it would not be sufficient to pay for a ticket to tbe nearest fixed star afore said. If thia be the case, it matters very little to us whether such a rail way is ever constructed. It would tie discouraging to go to the ticket office with a mass of gold equal to $3,800, 000,000 and be informed that tbe fare was $5,678,082,000. If tbe ticket agent wouldn't trust until we got back we'd be compelled to forego tbe trip.— Norrutown Herald. The Rural New Yorker expresses astonishment that any one whose busi ness it is to plough should not know how to attach a chain for tbe purpose of corering weeds.
