GARFIELD AS A CHRISTIAN. WASHINGTON, August 30.—Rev. F. D. Power, pastor of the Vermont Avenue Christian Church, this city, has written a letter concerning the Presidents character as a Christian man, in which he says: 'He has never hesitated when it was necessary to tes tify to his faith. He has lectured publicly ip the Christian Church with in two years on the evidences of Chris tian religion, and he has for six years been a devout and constant worshiper and communicant. Taking into the estimate all the temptations attendant upon such a career, the general loose ness of Washington life, and political life especially, the marked unfaithful ness of Christian men when they at tain such prominence in official posi tion, and the extreme poverty and ob scurity of his brethern in Washing ton, together with their poor house of worship, I esteem him as an unusual Christian man, faithful where nine out often would have failed.' MILK AS FOOD. Unadulterated, undiluted, unskim med, and properly treated milk, taken from a healthy cow in good condition, and produced by the consumption of healthy and nutricious grasses, and oth er kinds of food, contains within itself, in proper proportions, says Professor Sheldon, all the elements that are necessary to sustain human life through a considerable period of time. Scarcely any other single article of food will do this. When we eat bread and drink milk, we eat bread, butter, and cheese, and drink water—all of them in the best combination and con dition to nourish the human system. All things considered, good milk is the cheapest kind of food that we have, for three pints of it weighing three and threequarter pounds, contain as much nutriment as one pound of beef. There is no loss in cooking the milk, as there is in cooking the beef, and there is no bone in it that cannot bo eaten ; it is simple, palatable, nutricious, healthful, cheap, and always ready for use with or without preparation. This is to say that chemically 3-7' poands of milk is the equivalent of one pound of beef in flesh-forming or ni trogeneus constituents, and 3-7 pounds of milk is the equivalent of one pound of beef in health-producing elements, carbohydrates. We must therefore assume from the data offered that the relative values of beef and milk as hu man food are to ll£., or as in round numbers, 1 to 3£, —Ex. [Mondori, (Wii.) Buffalo Co. Herald.] Notions ot the Firat Settlers. Mr. W. H. Amidon, one of the first settlers in the town of Qilmantown, Wis., and one of the most industrious and hard working men in the county, has been very severely troubled with rheumatic pains during the past few years, so mut:h at times, that he was disabled from performing manual labor. Learning of the wonderful cures effect ed by the use of St Jacobs Oil he pro cured a few bottles and experienced immediate relief. Many others of our acquaintances have used it and express themselves as highly gratified, with the relief it has afforded them. This king of medicines can be bought every where. News tor Temperance People. BABDSTOWN, KY., August 24, 1881. The distillers throughout this coun tf are hesitating and undecided whether or not to go into active opera tions during the coming seasons The advance in corn, the dull market for whiskey and the large quantities in bond are the reasons advanced for their indecision. A few distillers who have made contracts for the corn will run on reduced capacities. Should the f>resent advance in corn be maintained t is safe to say that the coming season's product will not be over one-half of that of last season. "How are you to-day ?" Not very well. Go for a bottle of Peruna and be welL The good man bears with the fault of others very patiently ; the bad man bears with his own in the same way. If you wish to be happy you must learn to be just deaf enough not to hear some things and just blind enough not to see others. A Les Vegas, X. M., paper, classi fies all the accounts of clerical scandals which it can clip from its exchanges, as 'religious notes.' Swift said very surlily that 'the rea son why so few marriages are happy is because young ladies spend their time in making nets, not in making cakes.' Ingersoll's motto is like the epitaph which the Irishman wrote for his pig:— When he lived he lived in clover; When he died he died all over. A peculiarity of the lynching of Charles Stewart, a Mississippi wife murderer, was that his father-in-law prayed for him and helped to adjust the noose. Once it is known that Peruna cures disease and prevents its return, it will be absolute neglect of duty to be with out it. Therefore always keep a bottle in your cupboard. There are 'some experiences in life which make us feel like the boy who, when be stubbed his toe against a sharp stone, said he was too big to cry and too badly hurt to laugh. The world is full of eccentricities and vagaries. If some men's bodies were no straighter than their minds seem to be they would be crooked enough to ride on their own backs. If you have found that a dishonest life don't pay it is full time to become honest. The old adage says, 'lt is not necessary to drink up the whole pud dle in order to find that the water is dirty.' The London Society for the Preven tion of Cruelty to Animals has made an appeal to people who are leaving town to make due provisions for the support of their cats during their ab sence. Arizona is destined to be known as the Copper State, by the time it is ready to be admitted to the Union, recent developments in that region have revealed deposits of copper such are not foand in any other part of the continent, if in the world. London Times :—The last official census of the population of the Repub lic of Venezuela returns no less than 32,222 generals. Some of them are stated to be on active service, others in the reserve. The present Presi dent, Qeneral Guxman Blanco, has created 8,000 of them. The army itself is not so numerous as are its generals.' Mast, Poos dbCo.
