    CLEAN MONEY.
As a godly merchant lay upon his
dying bed be spoke to his children ot
tbe little property which be had acquir
ed and was leaving behind him.
'lt is not much,' he said, 'but there
is not a dirtu shilling in it.
There is' such a thing as clean
money. It may be earned bv diligence
in business, by honest labor of hand or
mind, or by the severest occupations
which are not esteemed as either easy
or genteel; but there is money even in
the coffers and purses of many who
profess to be followers of Christ which
all the waters of Jordan could not
make them clean. There are the
wages of unrighteousness, the gains of
ungodliness, the hoarded spoils wrung
from the thin hands of the poor and
the needy; there are revenues from the
traffic in strong drink; there are rents
paid to Church-members for places
that are used as traps and pitfalls to
ensnare unwary men ; there are gains
acquirad in a thousand ways which
are blackened with the stain of sin and
with the curse of God. Thousands on
thousands have thus laid up wealth
which shall curse them in life and
death; which shall ensure their children
and beguile them to their ruin, and
which shall finally eat their flesh as it
were fire when the Judge whostandoth
before the door shall come to make in
quisition for blood and to punished the
ungodly in the last great day.
O man ot earth, as you look upon
your gaius and treasures, as you count
your hoards and estimate your possess
ions, ask yourself the question, Is this
clean money 1 and decide that, as God
shall give you grace and help, nothing
which you possess shall deserve the
curse that follows the wages of un
righteousness, the gains of those who
know not and fear not God.
[Clinton, (Iowa) Herald.]
James Butler, Esq., Clerk of the
Roxbury Carpet Co., Boston Mass.,
employing eight hundred hands, in a
late communication concerning the
admirable working of an article intro
duced into tbe factory, says: The
famous Old German Remedy, St.
cobs Oil baß efiected several cures
among our men, who have been badly
hurt in working in the factory, and
they pronounce it a success every time.
The sign language of the North
American Indians has been newly con

A Vassar College girl is going to
marry a Chinaman. She wants a
husband who can do the housework.
If you doubt the merits of Days
Kidney Pad, try one, or ask your
neighbor who has used one, and it will
be all the evidence you will neeb.
When a woman burns her finger she
cries a little over it, and keeps the burn
in good condition to show her husband
when he come home, and get sympa
thy: A man in the same condition will
stick his digit in his mouth, kick
over the office stool, swear at the boy
and forget all about it. One is the
effect of love; the other of business.
Ulcerated and itching limbs. Doctors

Black silk may be restored to its
original deep black color by sponging
it with a decoction of common cheap
black tea, which contains all the ingre
dients of a black dye, viz., tannin and
iron, with usually some logwood to
add to the flavor. The silk is then
ironed with a moderately hot iron on
the wrong side, or placed betwwen
two sheets.
There was, according to the Rail
road Gazette, a total of 73 train acci
dents in the United States, in the
month of June, 1881; thirty-one per
sons were killed and seventy-eight in
jured ; 20 accidents caused the death
of one or more persons; 17 caused acci
dent, but not death, while in 3G cases,
or 49:3 per cent of the whole number,
there was no injury to persons record
ed.
Mr. James Hurley, the inventor of
the modern bicycle, is dead at the age
of fifty. He was tbe son of a poor far
mer in Allbourne, England, and, show
ing great skill as a machinist, became
foreman of the Conventry Machine
Company, in which capacity his inven
tive mind conceived and carried out
the bicycle. But the first machine was
very rude, and has since been much
improved on.
Miss Proudfut is one of the loveliest
girls in Southern Kansas, and a year
ago was the recipient of much admir
ing attention from tbe opposite sex :
but now there is a disposition on tbe
part of the young men to stay away
from her. The change is caused by the
fact that three of her suitors have re
ceived gunshot wounds while in her
company. It is not known who the
assassin is, but he is supposed to be
somebody who, being unable to secure
the prize himself, is determined that
nobody else shall do so.
The hero of 'The Romance of a Poor
Young Man ,' at a Millwaukee theatre,
resolved as usual to burn the paper
which proved his ownership of the
proud Marguerite's home. 'This sac
riffce do I make to my love,' he cried,
and held the document over a lamp.
It did not ignite, and he nervously
thrust it down the lamp chimney, re
peating the heroic remark. Still it
wouldn't burn. Next, he took off the
chimney, burned his fingers, and extin
guished the flame in his mad efforts to
make the sacriffce to his love ; but all
in vain, and the paper ouly got a crum
pling.
The Presbyterian Banner gets off
the following level headed comment:
'The races, under the phrase 'trials of
speed,' have become the principal fea
ture of nearly all our County and
State fairs and have prevertcd theni
altogether from their original design.
It is becoming a question whether it
would not be better to abolish the fairs
altogether rather than they should be
used to introduce betting and gambling
in all their forms among the people.
In the list for tbe approaching united
exhibition of the Pennsylvania State
Agricultural Society, $41,000 are offer
ed as premiums in all branches of in
dustry and art, while $12,500 in purses
are offered as 'premiums for speed.'
which means racing and all the evils
which are invitablv connected with it.
Is this wise ? Is it right? Has not
the public a right to expect something
better from these Societies? There is
no reason why the racecourse and tbe
raising of superior stock should be as
sociated together.
