    LOST IN THE SNOW.
A story of almost incredible endur
ance and fortitude come* from the far
West with the reports of Hood-; and
soow storms. Three men. including
E. D. J» T . Foote, Superintendent of the
stage line, started from Fort Fetter
man, on the Upper North Platte river,
for Rock Creek Station, on the Union
Pacific Railroad, on abuckboard drawn
by two powerful horses. The snow
was falling fast and d ifting badly, and
before they had reached the twenty-two
mile station they nad comp'etely lost
the trail and the horses were suffer- d
to wander about guided only by their
own instinct. After a time they left
the buckboard behind them and en
deavored to push forward on borsebaek.
At one time Mr. Foote was nearly
killed by his horse, which fell back
ward into a snowdrift eight feet deep.
After this the horses were abandoned,
and the men struggled along on foot,
bands, faces and feet being badly fro
zen. The three men had three sar-ks
of mail nd a canvas overcoat. The
first man would stand on his mail-sack
and throw the coat ahead of him, al
lowing him to take one step. Then
each man would follow on, step bv
step, and the last man, picking up the
first's bag, would heave it ahead f<»r
the first one to step on. In this way
they made something like three miles
and" when the third night set in thev
began calling for help, and in half an
hour or so were answered. Other calls
were made, and they were again an-!
swered by the firiug of a gun, but the
wind was so strong -bey could not form
any idea <>f the directcfti it came from
Again and again they called, and final
1* a light was seen; and in an hour
and a half they made the last quarter
of a mile, finding themselves at the
stage station, twenty-five miles from
the starting-point. The driver had to
be dragged the last quarter of a mile,
ami Mr. Foote says: "When I knew
that I was safe it seemed impossible
for me to walk. I fell down twice in
making the last few yards from thesta
ble. I had no strength to walk, and
after entering the barn could not eat."
The IjiUli***' Favorite.
Among the many thousands o<
ladies who have used Dr. Pierce's
Favorite Prescription and pronounced
it their favorite remedy, because so
efficient in the diseases and weaknesse
peculiar to women, are many who are
well and favorably known in the worm
of letters, as well as artists, musician
and a whole host of names from the
brilliant ranks of wealth and fashion.
It is pre-eminently the ladies' Favorite
Prescription. Its u-e, while being far
more safe and efficient, exempting them
from those painfoi, caustic operation-,
and the wearing of those mechanical
contrivances made like Peter Pindar's
razor—seller's razors—to sell, rather
than to cure.
