KkkpOitof Debt.—Uuder socie ty's behest the voting man must dress us well as bis fellows, give suppers as others do, and smoke as good cigars as his companions. To do this bo must borrow—perhaps forge. By this aw ful process hundreds of thousands of men have been slaughtered for time and eternity. People don't understand the ethics of debt. If I go in debt knowing I cannot pay for what 1 buy, I steal. A sneak thief is not so bad as a man who contracts debts intend ing not to pay them. Some people move everv May day to escape then creditors. "if there are any such here they ought to be in the penitentiary instead of a church. What did deb' do for Lord Bacon, towering above the intellect of his agelt made him take bribes. What did debt do for s>:r Walter Scott? It forced biiu to write until paralysis staved his hand. \\ hat did debt 'do for Robert Burns ? It seut him to the maddeuiag cup. What did debt do for Lord Bvron and bis mother? That mother died in a fit of rage on reading the upholsterer's bill at Newstead. William Pitt, although puid $30,000 annually by the govern ment of Great Britain, was crushed under debt, and Parliament had to vote $200,000 to pay his debts after his death. A LUMP of COAL —For years no one auppoped that a piece of soft coal, dug frou» its mine or bed in the earth, possessed any other quality than being combustible, or was valuable for any purpose than as fuel. It was next fount! that it would afford a gas which is also combustible. A chemical analysis proved it to be mad«; of hydrogen. In process of time, mechanical aud chemi cal ingenuity devised a mode of manu facturing this gas, and applying it to the lighting of buildings and cities on a large scale. In doing this, other pro ducts of distillation were developed, until, step by step, the following in gredients or materials are extracted from it: 1. An excellent oil to supply light bouses, equal to the best sperm oil, at lower cost. 2. Benzole—a light sort of etherial fluid, which evaporates easily, and, combined with vapor or moist air, is used for the purpose of portable gas lamps, so called. 3. Naphtha—a heavy fluid, useful to dissolve gutta-percha, india-rubber, etc. 4. An oil excellent for lubricating purposes. 5. Asphaltum, which is a black, sol id substance, used in making varnish es. 6. Paraffine, a white crystalline sub stance, resembling white wax, which can be made into beautiful wax candles; it melts at a temperature of 110 de grees, and affords an excellent light. All these substances are now made from soft coal. Alexander The Great wept because there were no more worlds to conquer, but the proprietors of Dr. Pierce's,Family Medicines who have found it necessary to establish a branch of the World's Dispensary at London, England, in order to supply from that great commercial emporium these remedial blessings to foreign countries, where they are largely n demand, do not share the great con queror's sentiments, as their conquests are of disease and have made happy not only the conqueror but the people who employ them. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery cures all blood and skin diseases, scrofulous affections, swellings and soreness. Dr. Pierce's Pellets are the little giants cathartic; Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription—wo man's tonic and nervine—Dr. Pierce's Extract of smart-Weed, the great reme dy for colds and all bowel affections as diarrhoea, dysentery and flux. World's Dispensary Medical Association, pro prietors, Buffalo and London. Up to the present time Allegheny county has paid $5,642,5'1 on account of the riot claims. Purge out the morbid humors of the blood, by a dose or two of Ayer's Pills, and you will have clearer heads as well as healthier bodies. Keep an oyster shell in your tea-ket tle if you wish to prevent the forma . tion of a crust on the inside of it. Rev. Henry Arms says: "I earnestly believe that Day's Kidney Pad is the only infallible remedy in the world for that prevalent and distressing com plaint 'Back Ache.'' The next Legislature of Pennsyl vania will have two very important matters to attend to, making the Con gressional and Legislative apportion ments. Parents will find the A. S. T. Co Black Tip not objectionable like the metal, while it will wear as well. By asking for it in their children's shoes, tbey can reduce shoe bills one half. She looked out on the soft falling flakes and whispered: "I would be sleighed, for love of thee!" and it hit him so hard that be immediately went oat and got "slewed." There are over a quarter of a million of recipients of pensions in the United States. Commissioner Bentley esti mates that $50,000,000 will be requir ed to pay them for the current year. The theological student who was forced to resort to stealing to help pay his way through the seminary presents the latest conspicuous example of doing evil that good may come. An old Darkey Baptist Minister nsed to lay particular stress on the fact, that the Testament whilst alluding to John the Baptist, never speaks of John Ihe Methodist, or John the Presbyterian; or John the Episcopalian. The reduction of the charge for postal mon«v orders for five dollars or a less sum to five cents, and the issue of orders to the amount of SI,OOO is rec ommended by the Postmaster General in his report. One of the inscriptions on the Cow pens monument is to read thu-i: "1781 —One People, No North, No South, No East, No West ; A Common Inter est, One Country. One Destiny. 1881 —As It Was, so Ever Let It Be." That was just what a good many of lis were talking about all along from J 861 to 1865. .Ail those who violate the election lawn do not escape punishment in Philadelphia.
