THE LAW OF TRESPASS. The following summary of the law is from a report on the subject made to the State Board of Agriculture of Penn sylvania: Trespass is defined as "any transgression or offence against the law of nature, of society, or of the country in which we live, whether it relates to a man's person or property. This is its widest meaning. Ordinarily, however, it has rc.er rncc onlv to an entry on the property of another without authority, and in doing damage while there, whether much or little. The law gives the owner exclusive control over his property. Any mtringe ment of his rights without his pei mis sion or justified by legal authority therefore constitutes a trespass. It does not need that the laud should be inclosed by fences. The law supposes an imaginary inclosure which answers every purpose, and the simple act of passing over it consti tutes trespass, although no barm should really result to crops, cattle or anght Evcrv person legally authorized to seize certain goods on a man\s premi ses dare not break open doors (or that purpose, if be does, his authority avails him nothing, and be becomes a com mon trespasser. Neither is a person justified in so ar ranging spouts as to discharge water on another man's land, even though he never steps off his own grounds; nor to permit filth to pass a boundary line without due permission. When the spout first discharges on a man's own premises and the contents then find their way to a neighbor s premises it docs not constitute a tres pass. Hunting and fishing, however, con stitute the most common and annoy ing sources of trespass to which our farmers are subjected. Custom has indoeed some people to believe they can hunt or fish on the lands or waters of other men with im punity. Nothing is wider of the fact than this. Because there can be no property in rabbits, quails, squirrels, pheasants and other feral birds and animals, they think these may be pursued wherever thev mav be discovered. It is hardly necessary to say that the same laws governing trespass iri other cases prevail here. No matter that neither grass nor grain are trampled down, whether gates are left closed, bars left op and no rails broken, the pursuit of such game on the lands of another without permis sion is trespass. To even enter an inclosed piece of woods, where there are no crops to lie injured, in pursuit of game, which may have taken refuge there, is a violation of law—quite as much as if a wheat field in ear had been trampled down. "OBJECT TEA CHI NO." "Object teaching" is not always suc cessful, as the following incident, re lated by the Youth 1 * Companion, will show: A gentleman called his servant one day and informed him be wished him to learn the names of the books in the Bible. "Now," said he, "I will tell you the first, and during the day I will ask you what it is, to see if you remember ; it is Genesis." Later in the day Bob was called, but be could not remember what it was. "Now," said bis master, "I have a way to impress it upon your mind so ▼ou cannot forget it. Now, Bob, we have an old horse in the stable. What do we call it ?" "Jenny." "Correct. And we have a little girl in the kitchen; what do we cull her ?" "Sif." "very well. Now put the two to gether and you have Jenny—Sis— Genesis. I think you can remember it until to-morrow." "Yes, sah." The next morning Bob was sum moned to appear before his master. "Good morning Bob. Can you give me the name of the first book in the Bible, this morning?" "Yes, sab." "Well, what is it ?" "I>e ole hoss, sah." A CONNECTICUT 800 ST«»ev. —The New Haven Union is responsible for this: "A Bockville sporting man, having a litter of setter pnps—pedi greed stock —was taking special pains to give them a good start in the world, and to this end it was bis custom to rise from his bed at short intervals to feed them. It became rather tedious business for him to 'crawl out' during the cold winter nights to attend to their wants, so he tried a new [dan. Setting a pan of milk in a warm corner hebind the stove, be went to lied, and in the small hours the young canines called lor food. Thinking to make one job of it be arose in the dark and car ried the pan carefully to the wood house, when seizing each pup by the nape of its neck he thrust il« nose into the pan, when all b.id 'got to their work,' returned to bis bed. The next morning be was roused by his wife, wbo wanted to know what in the world ho had done with her bread pan. Investigation followed; his wife bad wet up a batch of bread and set it behind the stove to rise; this pan our 'shot' bad carried to the pups, and they, after gorging themselves with the dough, waddled back to their warm nest. The yeast was good and tba puppies rose, looking like so many muffs, with the head of the animal used for trimming, while their legs and tails resembled warts on an early rose potato." —"You are an ojus, hidjus ijjit, my dear!" said a mamma to her daughter at dancing school. [From the Philadelphia Timer.] Tho tvmpanum of the human ear is one of the mo't exquisitely delicate parts of the human frame. It is thinner than a bauk note, rtrongrer than parchment, and is held in its place by tinny muscles, which regulate its teDsion with a perfection never reached by mechanical art. Rightly treated and carefully used, the tym panum will last its owner a lifetime. Maltreated aud abused, it becomes like the head of a thoughtless child's drum. The tympanum is not a blacksmith's anvil, nor a butcher's block, nor the bottom of a tin kettle, nor the meialic surface of a Chinese gong. All these things will stand banging and kicking and pounding "and thumping, lt pounded and banged and shouted at and yelled into, the tympanum loses that exquisite sensitiveness which is its chief value. (Juee damaged it is beyond repair. Nobody ever patched a tvmpanum or turned it up when it lost its proper tension. It were well if every young man preparing to l»e a preacher were to 3tudy the formation of th<- human r-ar At some of our theological seminaries a fair amount of attention is given to the cultivation of the voic?, and yet there are many instances in which both professors and students imper fectly attend to this. The attention they give to it is more with a view to the student's making the most of it for his own purposes than being merciful to those who come within ear-shot of it. It JS as if a gardener carefully made himself acquainted with the u><- of his spade and hoe without learning anything about the character and nature of the soil into which these useful implements are to lie thrust. The young preacher knows that he must make himself heard and that the voice is what will carry his message to the hearers So he lifts it to its topmost pitch and strains it to his ntmost ability. If in a church v.th two hundred people in its pews, lie puts on force until he launches into the air a volume of sound which might easily reach five thousand people, if so many were within hale. He is deeply in earnest, and he confounds earnest ness with noise. He is determined to make his congregation hear and to keep them awake. Mistaking himself for a fog-horn or for the blast of an iron furnace or for a locomotive whis tle, he screeches out a tempest of Uosf*d which in like a sudden storm on Lake Galilee and neariy over whelms the hearers. They feel as if beaten and bruised about the ears Instead of being refreshed by gentle sound-waves, they are, as it were, dashed by surf and hit by breakers. The suffering tympanum vainly «a«-k-i relief. It would find it in slumber, were slumber possible amid the racket. To listen even to the most faithful message of the Gospel under such cir cumstances is to be worried rather than edified. Unfortunately, many of our young ministers have this habit of making an unnecessary noise. Their intention is good enough. They are strangely ignorant of what is bet-.t for them and their hearers. They are spending much vocal strength in vain and causing their hearer* great discom fort One day some kind old body will drop a hint to a vociferous preacher, and the voeiferator will open his eyes in astonishment at being told that he is making more noise than is needed. FIRST ROMANCE IN Sl'/!/NO. [Macon (Gn.) Telegraph.] It was moonlight on the Hill. From out the trees a gentle zephyr creeps to rob the hyacinth of its j>crfumcd breath, and adown the garden walk the whipperwill lends his monotone of Kadncss unto the balmy night. Sleep, with brooding wings, sits silent o'er the scene. But hark ! it is the tink ling guitar strummed by the lonely Augustus. He comes. Beneath the vine-clad window in the ghostly glonm ing he pauses, and up the flowor-trel lised wall he shoots a melancholy tenor fraught with the passionate in quiry, "Must I leave thee here alone?" No answer returns save the haunting echo and the low clicking of a distant door. The scene changes. It is the back yard tableau. A white robed old man bends above a chained dog and soothes his too eager spirit as he loosens the collar. A low voice says "S cc-eek him, Bull—take a short cut round the rose-bush." A flash—and the old man is alone. The clatter of a fallen guitar comes from the front; a sound like the rush of a steeple-chase nearing a hedge i.i b true l»ack. and neck and neck two figure* cross the picket fence to di~ap|»ear down the dim perspective of the de serted street. Then the o!<| man meets Bull ns he returns on the outer walk, and removes in a discouraged manner a dark object from his foaming mouth, while the animal retires to his kennel in silence. The door opens ami shuts upon the white robed form, and all is still again. Bat as he gets in bed and shoves the old ladj's feet out of the warm place, he mutters, "Bull is gettin' old, an' serenades don't pay dividends like they used to, but if the business keeps up, 1 think you will be justified in startin' another patch-work quilt, Maria. That last fellow left real eassumer." "What sorter sample did you get?" "Tolerable fair. There was a long strip with a pistol-pocket hangin' to it, and one gallus butt'n." A lecturer was explaining to a little girl how a lobster east his shell, when lie had outgrown it. Said he: "What do you do when you have out grown your clothes? You cast them tt,iidc ; do you not ?" "Oh ! no," re plied the little one. "We let out the tucks." A lecturer on optics, i„ explain ing the mechanism of the of vis ion, remarked : "I.et any man clone] j into his wife's eye, and he will sec himself so exceedingly small that the faces of his audience, aud übruptly stopped. —A young bachelor Sheriff was called upon to serve an attachment against a beautiful young widow. He accordingly called upon her and said, "Madam, I have an attachment for you " The widow blushed, and said his attachment was reciprocated. "Yon don't understand me; you must pro ceed to court." "I know it i* leap year, sir, but I prefer you to do tho courting." "Mrs. I' , this is no time for trifling, the Justice is wating." "Tim Justice is? Why 1 prefer a ptouu.'
