City and County of Nac-Vork, ss.
"William Armstrong, of the said City, being duly
sworn, doth depose and say that he "is a practical
Diuggist and Chemist That some time in the latter
part of May, or first of June, StS, a'man by the name
i Jacob Townscnd, who at that time was a book and
janiphlct peddler, called upon dejvonent, at the house
of Mr. Thompson. No. 42 Huds-on-strcct, where depo
i.ent loanied, and requested deponent to write him a
recipe by which to make a Syrup of Sarsaparilla.
Deponent further says, that he" became acquainted
w ith said Townscnd a't the ofllce of Theodore Foster,
Fsq., Hook Publisher, with whom said Townscnd
dealt. That said Townscnd had had frequent converse
tions with deponent i expecting the manufacture of an
article of Sarsaparilla to be sold under the name of Dr.
Jacob Townscnd.
That said Townsend stfitcd he was an old man, and
poor, and was not fit for hard labor and wished to
make some money, in order to live easy in his old
days, and that, if Sarsaparilla under the namoof Town
snd sold so well, ana so much money was made by
it, he could see no reason why he might not make
romcthing out of it too, (his name being Townscnd,)
if he could get n capable person to prepare a recipe,
and manufacture it for him. Deponent in one of the
conversations asked said Townscnd if he was related
to Dr. S. P. Townscnd, to which he replied, that he
knew Dr. S. P. Townsend would be down on him after
he should commence. But that he did not care for
him, as he had formed a co partnership with men who
could furnish the requisite amount of capital and was
well picpared to defend himself against any attack
that might be made on him.
Deponent further says, that pursuant to the request
of said Jacob Townscnd, he wrote a recipe for tho
manufacture of a Syrup of Sarsaparilla, and gave it to
him. Said Townscnd observed that he wanted to
make a specimen to exhibit to his partners for their
spproval. as he wished to gratifv them in every thing,
us they furnished all the capital said Townscnd also
told deponent that the hottles they were to use wero
to be of the same size and shapc'as Dr. S. P. Town
eend's, and deponent, at the request of said Jacob
Townsend, went to the office of Dr. S. P. Townsend,
and procured one of his labels.
And deponent further says, that he has been inform
ed, and verily believes the Syrup of Sarsaparilla, sold
as Old Jacob Townsend's, is made after the recipe fur
nished by deponent, to Jacob Townsend, as aforesaid.

PROOF!! PROOF!!!
Here is proof conclusive that Dr. S. P. Townsend's
ParsapanUa is the original. The following is from
iimie of the most respectable papers in this State,
FHOM THE
Ncrtv "York Dally Tribune.
Qg- "We published an advertisement inadvertently
Mime time since that did injustice to Dr. S. P. Town
.end, who is the original proprietor of the preparation
of Sarsaparilla known as Dr. Townsend's. Other
parties have within the past few months engaged or
connected themselves with a man by the name of
Townsend who put up a medicine and'calls it by the
ame name. This medicine was advertised in" Thr
Tiihunt as the original, &.c This adi eitisement ahc
contained matter derogatory to the character of Dr
S. P. Townsend and that of his medicine. "We regret
t ?ppeared, and in justice to the Dr. make this ex
planation. FROM THE
Tw.iv York Dnlly Sun.
Dr.. Townsund's extraordinary advertisement, which
occupies an entire page of the Scr, w ill not escape
notice. Dr. S. P. Townsend, w ho is the original pro
prietor of Dr. Townsend's Sarsaparilla. and whose of
fice is next door to ours, where he has been for sever
al years, is driving an immense business. He receives
no less than four hundred do7cn of Sarsaparilla per
Jay, and even this enormous quantity does not supply
the demand. No medicine ever gained eo great s
opularity as his preparation of the Sarsaparilla. His
edition of Almanacs for 1S-J9 cost $22,000, and he
has paid the New York Son for advertising, in the
last four years, over $10,000, and he acknowledges
that it is the cheapest advcitising he has had done.
This medicine is exported to the Canadas, West In
dies, South America and Euiope, in considerable
quantities, and is coming into geneial use in those
countries, as well as here.
Swindler?.
Druggists and others that sell Sarsaparilla for the
genuine and original Dr. Townsend's Sarfcapaiilla,
that is not signed by S. P. Townsend, commits a fraud,
and swindles the "customers. Men that would be
guilty of such an act, would commit any other fraud
and no Druggist of common intelligence but knows
that ours is the only genuine.
Old Jncob Townsend.
Some people who are not well informed, and have
not read the papers, and not seen our adveitisements,
have been led to suppose, that because these men ad
i crtise their stufl" as " Old Jacob Townsends," that it
must, of course, be the original. It is lees than one
j ear since they commenced to make their medicine.
Ours has been in the market over ten years.
Tills Old Jacob Townscnd.
They are endeavoring to palm ofl" on the public as
an old Physician, &c. He is not a regular educated
Physician, and never attempted to manufacture a med
icine, until these men hired him for the use of his
name. They say they do not wish the people to be
lieve that their Sarsaparilla is ours, or the same but
the better to deceive the public, they at the same time
a-crt that their's is the Old Dr. Townsend's, and the
original ; and endeavor to make the people believe
that the stufl' they manufacture, is the Dr. Townsend's
Sarsaparilla, that has performed so manv wonderful
cures for the past ten cars, and which lias gained a
reputation which no other medicine ever enjoved
which is a base, villainous, unprincipled falsehood.
"We have commenced suits against these men for
damages. We wish it to be understood, that the old man
is no relation to Dr. Townsend whatever. Jn their ad
vertisements and circulars, thev publish a number of
gross falsehoods respecting Dr." Townscnd, which we
will not notice.
False Reports.
Our opponents have published in the papers, that
Dr. S. P. Townscnd was dead. This thev send to their
ngents about the country, who report "that wc have
given up business, &c &c. The public should be on
their guard, and not be deceived by these unprinci
pled men.
Notice of Removal. After thi! first of September,

From the Reading Eagle.
There was never, perhaps, a medicine brought
before the public, thai has in so short a time won
such a reputation as M'A LUSTER'S ALL
HEALING OR WORLD-SALVE. Almost eve
ry person that has made trial of it speaks warmly
in its praise. One has been cured by, it, of the
most painful Rheumatism, another of the Piles, a
third of a troublesome pain in the limbs, &c, &c.
If it does not give immediate relief, in every case,
it can do no injury, being applied outwardly. As
another evidence of the wonderful healing power
possessed by this salve, we subjoin the following
certificate, from a respectable citizen of Maiden
creek township in this county :
Maidencueek, Berks Co., March 30, 1847.
Messrs. Ritter & Co. I desire to inform you
that 1 was entirely cured of a severe pain in the
back, by the use of M'Allisters All-Healing Salve,
which 1 purhhased from you. 1 suffered with it
for about 20 years, and at night was unable to
sleep. During that time I tried various remedies,
which were prescribed for me by physicians and
other persons, without receiving any relief, and
at last made trial of this Salve, with a result fa
vorable beyond expectation. I am now entirely
free from the pain, and enjoy at night a peaceful
and sweet sleep. I have also used the Salve
since for other complaints, with similar happy re
sults. Your friend,

That dreadful cough ! The Lungs are in dan
ger ! The work of the destroyer hath begun.
The cough of consumption hath in it sounds
of Death. I
Are you a mother ? Your darling child, your
idol and earthly joy, is now perhaps, confined
10 her chamber by a dangerous cold, he.r pale
cheeks, her lhin shrunken fingers, tell the hlod
disease has already gained upon her, the sound
of her sepulchral cough pierces your soul.
Young man, when just about to enter life,
disease sends a -bear-crushing blight over the
fair prospects of the future, your heciic cough
and feeble limbs tell of your loss of hope, but
you need not despair. There is a balm which
will heal the wounded lungs, it is
Sherman's all-healing balsam.
Mrs. Attree, the wife of Wm. H. AUree, Esq.,
was given up by Dr. Sewall of Washington,
Drs. Roe and McClellan of Philadelphia, Dr.
Roe and Dr. Moti of New York. Her friends
all thought he must die. She had every ap
pearance of being in consumption, and was so
pronounced by her physicians Sherman's Bal
sam was given and it cured her.
Mrs. Garrabrantz, of Bull's Ferry, was also
cured of consumption by this Balsam when all
other remedies failed to give relief she was
reduced to a skelion. Dr. A. C. Castle, Den
tist , 2S1 Broadway, has witnessed its effects
in several cases where no other medicine af
forded relief but the Balsam operated like a
charm. Dr. C. also witnessed its wonderful
effects in curing Asthma, which it never fails
of doing. Spitting Blood, alarming as it may
be, is effectually cured by this Balsam. It
heals the ruptured or wounded blood vessels,
and makes the lungs sound again.
Rev. Henry Jones, 108 Eighth avenue, was
cured of cough and catarrhal affection of 50
years standing. Tho first dose gave him more
relief than all the other medicine he had ever
taken. Dr. L. J. Beals, 19 Delancy-street,
gave it to a sister-inlaw who was laboring un
der Consumption, and to another sorely afflic
ted wilh the Asthma. Iifboth cases its effects
were immediate, soon restoring rhem to com
fortable health.
Mrs. Lchreiia Wells, 95 Christie-st. suffered
from Asthma 42 years. Sherman's Balsam
relieved her at once, and she is comparatively
well, being enabled to subdue every atmck by
a timely use of this medicine. This indeed is
the great remedy for Coughs, Colds, Spitting
Blood, Liver Complaints, and all the affections
of the throat, and even Asthma and Consump
tion. Price 25 cents and SI per bottle.

RAISING BLOOD AND CONSUMPTION.
Mr. Milne, Builder, in Brookfyn, was at
tacked with raising blood, followed by a cough,
pain in the side, and all the usual symptoms of
consumption. He employed two of the best
physicians ; they did him no good, and told
him he could not live.
Hearing of the wonderful cures performed
by Sherman's Balsam, he sent at 10 o'clock at
night to Mrs. Hayes, 136 Fulton street, and
got a bottle ; it operated like a charm, stopped
the bleeding and cough ! Before he had taken
one bottle he was able to be about his work.
It had saved his life. His daughter, residing
at 127 Myrtle Avenue, can attest it.
Miss Ann Maaton, of Williamsburg, living
in Tenth, near South Fourth-street, says That
she had been troubled wilh a hacking cough,
and pain in the chest, for a long time, which
at last become so bad that she was obliged to
give up her school for more than a year. She
then commenced taking the All-Healing Bal
samwhich soon alleviated her symptoms.
She is now fast recovering, and has resumed
her laborious occupation as a teacher,
H years Mr. John O'Neil, 10th avenue and
21st street, suffered with a cough, raising of
phlegm, and pain in his side. Ho could get
no relief till he tried the All-Healing Balam,
which drove the pain from his side, allayed
the cough, and brought the disease upon the
surface; and before he had lakon three bottles,
was entirely cured.

of Pleurisy, Raising of Blood, severe Cough,

Life Pills and Phcbnix li
These Medicines have wW bcon before tho
public for a period of FIFTEEN YEARS,
during that, time have maintained u high charac
ter in almost every part of the globe for. their ex- .
traordinnry and immediate, power of rcstonnpr per
fect health to persons Htifftriiig under nearly every
kind of disease to which the human frame is liable.
IN MANY THOUSANDS
of certificated instances, they have even rescued
sufferers from the very verge of an untimely"
grave, after all the deceptive nostrums of the day
had Utterly failed ; and to many thousands they
have permanently secured that uniform enjoy
ment of health, without which life itself is but
a partial blessing. So great, indeed, has their
efficacy invariably and infallibly proved, that it
has appeared scarcely less than miraculous to
those who were acquainted with the beautifully
philosophical principles upon which they are com
pounded, and upon which they consequently act.
rt was to their manifest and sensible action in
purifying tho springs and channels of life, and en
duin" them with renewed tone and vigor, that
theywere indebted for their name.
Unlike the host of pernicious quackeries which
boast of vegetable ingredients, the LIFE MEDI
CINES are purely and Bolely vegetable ; and
contain neither Mercury, or Antimony, or
Arsenic, nor any other mineral, in any form
whatever. They are entirely composed of ex
tracts from rare and powerful plants, the virtues
of which, though long known to several Indian
tribes, and recently to some eminent pharmaceu
tical chemists, are altogether unknown to the
icmoraut pretenders to medical science ; and were
never before administered in so happily efhcacious
a combination.
The first operation is to loosen from the coata
of the stomach and bowels the various impuri
ties and crudities constantly settling round them ;
and to remove the hardened faeces which collect
in the convolutions of the small intestines. Other
medicines only partially cleanse these, and leave
such collected masses behind to produce habitual
Costiveness, with all its train of evils, or sudden
Diarrhccn with its imminent dangers. This fact
is well-known to all regular anatomists who ex
amine the human bowels after death ; and hence
the prejudice of these well-informed men against
the quack medicines of the age. The second
effect of the VEGETABLE LIFE MEDI
CINES is t0 cleanse the kidneys and the blad
der ; and, bv this means, the liver and lungs,
the healthful action of which entirely depends
upon the regularity of the urinary organs. The
blood, which takes its red color from the agency
of the liver and lungs, before it passes into the
heart, being thus purified by them, and nourished
by food coming from a clean stomach, courses
freely through trie veins, renewB every part of
the system, and triumphantly mounts the ban
ner, of health in the blooming cheek.
The following are among the distressing va
riety of human diseases in which the VEGE
TABLE LIFE MEDICINES a well known
to be infallible.
DYSPEPSIA, by thoroughly cleansing the
first and second stomachs, and creating a flow of
pure healthy bile, instead of the stale and acrid
kind ; Flatulency, r58 OF Appetite, Heart
burn, Headache, Restlessness, Ill-Temper,
Anxietv, Languor, and Melancholy, which
are the general symptoms of Dyspepsia, will
vanish, as a natural consequence of its cure,
Costiveness, by cleansing the whole length
of the intestines with a solvent process, and
without violence ; all violent purges leave the
bowels costive within two days.
Diarrhoea and Cholera, by removing the
sharp acrid fluids by which these complaints are
occasioned, and by promoting the lubricative se
cretion of the mucous membrane.
Fevers of all kinds, by restoring the blood to a
regular circulation, through the process of perspi
ration in such cases, and the thorough solution of
all intestinal obstruction in others.
The Life Medicines have been known to
cure Rheumatism permanently in three weeks,
and Gout i balf that time, by removing local
inflammation from the muscles and ligaments of
the joints.
Dropsies of all kinds, by freeing and strength
ening the kidneys and bladder : they operate most
delightfully on these important organs, and hence
have ever been found a certain remedy for the
worst cases of Gravel.
Also "Worms, by dislodging from the turnings
of the bowels the slimy matter to which these
creatures adhere.
Asthma "d Consumption, by relieving the
air-vessels of the lungs from the mucous which
even slight colds will occasion, and which, if not
removed, becomes hardened, and produces these
dreadful diseases. -
Scurvy, Ulcers, and Inveterate Sores, by
the perfect purity which these LIFE MEDI
CINES give to the blood, and all the humors.
Scorbutic Eruptions Bad Complex
ions, by their alterative effect upon the fluids that
feed the skin, and the morbid slate of which occa
sions all eruptive complaints, sallow, cloudy, und
other disagreeable complexions.
The use of these Pills for a very short time
will effect an entire cure of Salt Rheum, and a
striking improvement in the clearness of the Bkin.
Common Colds and Influenza will always be
cured by one dose, or by two even in the worst
cases.
PILES. Asa remedy for this most distressing
and obstinate malady, the VEGETABLE LIFE
MEDICINES deserve a distinct and emphatic
recommendation. It is well-known to hundreds
in lliis city, that the former proprietor of these
valuablo Medicines was himself aftlicled with this
compaint for upwards of thikty-five years; and
that he tried in vain every remedy prescribed
within the whole compass of the Materia Mr.dica.
He however at length tried the Medicine which
is now offered to tho public, and he was cured in
a very short time, after his recovery had been pro
nounced not only improbable, but absolutely im
possible, by any human means.
FEVER AND AGUE.
For this scourge of the western country these
Medicines will he found a safe, speedy, and cer
tain remedy. Other medicines leave the system
subject to a return of the disease a cure by these
medicines is permanent -TRY THEM, BE
SATISFIED, AND BE CURED.
Bilious Fevers and Liver Complaints.
General Debility, Loss ok Appktite, and
Diseases ok Females these medicines have been
used with the most beneficial results in cases of
this description: King's Evil and Scrofula, in
its worst forms, yieldB to the mild yet powerful
action of these remarkable Medicines. ight
Sweats, Nervous Deihlity, Nervous Com
plaints of all kinds, Palpitation of the Heart,
Painter's Colic, are speedily cured.
MERCURIAL DISEASES.
Persons whose constitutions have become im
paired by tho injudicious use of Mercury, will
find these Medicines a perfect cure, as they never
fail to eradicate from tho system all the eftects of
Mercury infinitely sooner than tho most powerful
preparations of Sarsaparilla. A single 'trial will
place them beyond tho reach of competition, in
the estimation of every patient.
