to judge which is the genuine and original, and of the
honestv of the men who arc employed in selling it as
the' original Df Townsend's Sarsapaiilla. Dr. 8. P.
Towmond was the original proprietor and inventor of
Dr. Townscdd's Sarsaparilia, and his medicine has
gained a reputation that no other remedy ever gaiucd.
He manufactured oerone million of bottles last year,

City and Counly of Netc-Yorl; ss.
William Armstrong, of the said City, being duly
worn, dt.th lepoc and say that he is a practical
Druggist and Chemist. That some time in the latter
pait of May, or first of June, 1343, a man by the name
f Ja6ob Townsend, who at that time was a book and
pamphlet peddler, called upon deponent, at the house
of Mr. Thompson, No. 42 Hudson-street, where depo
nent !oarded, and requester! deponent to write him a
recipe by which to make n Syrup of Sarsaparilia.
Deponent further says, that he became acquainted
with said Townsend at the ofHcc or Theodore Foster,
Ksq Book Publisher, with whom said Townsend
dealt That said Townsend had had frequent convcrs a
tjons with dejroncnt respecting the manufacture of an
.article of Sarsaparilia to Iks sold under the name of Dr.
Jacob Townsend.
That said Townsend stated he was an old man, and
poor, and was not fit for hard labor and wished to
make -some mane-, in order to live easy in his old
days, ami that, if Sarsaparilia under the name of Town
send sold so well, and so much money was made by
it, he could see no reason why he might not make
something out of it too, (his name being Townsend,)
if he could get a capable person to prepare a recipe,
and manufacture it for him. Deponent in one of the
conversations asked said Townsend if he was related
to Dr. 5. T. Townsend, to which he replied, that he
knew Dr. S. P. Townsend would be down on him after
lie should commence. But that he did not care for
him, as he had formed a co-partnership with men who
could furnish the rcqimite amount of capital and was
well prepared to defend himself against any attack
that might be made on him.
Deponent fmfher says, that pursuant to the request
of said Jacob Townsend, he wrote a recipe for the
manufacture of a Syrup of Sarsaparilia, and gave it to
him. Said Townsend observed that he wanted to
make a specimen to exhibit to his partners for their
approval, as he wished to gratifv them in every thing,
hs they furnished all the capital said Townsend also"
toW fleponeut that the bottles they were to uc were
to be of the same si.e and shapc'as Dr. S. P. Town
mend's, and deponent at the request of said Jacob
Townsend, went to the office of Dr. S. P. Townsend,
and procured one -of his labels.
And deponent further says, that he has been inform,
ed, and verily believes the" Syrup of Sarsaparilia, sold
sit Old Jacob Towjiend's, is madetifler the recipe fur
nished by deponent, fo Jacob Townsend, as aforesaid.
And further deponent saith not.

the "better to deceive the public, they , at the same time

reputation which no other medicine ever enjoyed
which is a base, villainous, unprincipled falsehood.

There was never, perhaps, a medicine brought
before the public, lhat has in so short a time won
such a reputation as M'ALLISTER'S ALL
HEALING OR WORLD-SALVE. Almost eve
ry person that has made trial of it speaks warmly
in its praise. One has been cured by it, of the
most painful Rheumatism, another of the Piles, a
third of a troublesome pain in the limbs, &c, &c.
If it does not give immediate relief, in every case,
it can do no injury, being applied outwardly. As
another evidence of the wonderful healing power
possessed by this salve, we subjoin the following
certificate, from a respectable citizen of Maiden
creek township in this county !
Maidencreek, Berks Co., March 30, 1847.
Messrs. Ritter & Co. I desire to inform you
that I was entirely cured of a severe pain in the
back, by the use of M'Allisters All-Healing Salve,
which I purhhased from you. I suffered with it
for about 20 years, and at night was unable to
sleep. During that time I tried various remedies,
which were prescribed for me by physicians and
other persons, without receiving any relief, and
at last made trial of this Salve, with a result fa
vorable beyond expectation. I am now entirely
free from the pain, and enjoy at night a peaceful
and sweet sleep. I have also used the Salve
since for other complaints, with similar happy re
sults. Your friend,
JOHN HOLDINBACH.

That dreadful cough ! The Lungs are in' dan

The cough of consumption Rath in it sounds

Are you a mother! Your darling child, your
idol and earthly joy, is now perhaps, confined
io her chamber by a dangerous cold, her pale
cheeks, bor ihin shrunken fingers, tell the hlod
disease has already gained upon her, the sound
of her sepulchral cough pierces your soul.
Young man, when just about to enter life,
disease sends a hear-crushir.g blight over the
fair prospects of the future, your hectic cough
and feeble limbs tell of your loss of hope, but
you need not despair. There is a balm which
will heal ihe wounded lungs, it is
Sherman's all-healing balsam.
Mrsv Atiree, the wife of Wm. H. Attree, Esq.,
was given up b? Dr. Sewall of Washington,
Drs. Roe and McClellan of Philadelphia, Dr.
Roe and Dr. Molt of New York. Her friends
all thought bhe must die. She had every ap
pearance of being in consumption, and wa8 so
pronounced by her physicians Sherman's Bal
sam was given and it cured her.
Mrs. Garrabrantz, of Bull's Ferry, was also
cured of consumption by this Balsam when all
other remedies failed to give relief- she was
reduced to a skelton. Dr. A. C. Casile, Den
tist . 281 Broadway, has witnessed its effects
in several cases whore no other medicine af
forded relief but the Balsam operated like a
charm. Dr. C. also witnessed its wonderful
effects in curing Asthma, which it never fails
of doing. Spitting Blood, alarming as it may
be, is effectually cured by this Balsam. It
heals the ruptured or wounded blood vessels,
and makes the lungs sound again.
Rev. Henry Jones, 108 Eighth avenue, was
cured of cough and catarrhal affection of 50
years standing. The first dose gave him more
relief than ali the other medicine he had ever
taken. Dr. L.J. Beals, 19 Delancy-street,
gave it to a sisier-inlaw who was laboring un
der Consumption, and lo another sorely afflic
ted with the Asthma. In both cases its effects
were immediate, soon restoring them lo com
fortable health.
Mrs. Lchretia Wells, 95 Christie-st. suffered
from Asthma 42 years. Sherman's Balsam
relieved her at once, and she is comparatively
well, being enabled to subdue every atlack by
a timely use of this medicine. This indeed is
the great remedy for Coughs, Colds, Spitting
Blood, Liver Complaints, and all ihe affections
of the throat, and even Asthma and Consump

RAISING BLOOD AND CONSUMPTION.
Mr. Milne, Builder, in Brookfyn, was at
tacked with raising blood, followed by a cough,
pain in the side, and all the usual symptoms of
consumption. He employed two of ihe best
physicians ; they did him no good, and told
him he could not live.
Hearing of the wonderful cures performed
by Sherman's Balsam, he sent at 10 o'clock at
night to Mrs. Hayes, 136 Fulton street, and
got a bottle ; it operated like a charm, slopped
the bleeding and cough! Before he had taken
one botile he was able to be about his work.
It had saved his life. His daughter, residing
at 127 Myrtle Avenue, can attest it.
Miss Ann Maston, of Williamsburg, living
in Tenth, near South Fourth-street, says That
she had been troubled with a hacking cough,
and pain in the chest, for a long time, which
at last become so bad that she was obliged lo
give up her school for more than a year. She
ihen commenced taking the All-Healing Bal
sam which soon alleviated her symptoms.
She is now fast recovering, and has resumed
her laborious occupation as a teacher,
14 years Mr. John O'Neil, 10th avenue and
2Isl street, suffered wiih a cough, raising of
phlegm, and pain in his side. He could get.
no relief till he tried the All-Healing Balam,
which drove the pain from his side, allayed
the cough, and brought the disease upon the
surface; and before he had taken three bottles,
was entirely cured.

MOFFAT'S
Life Pills and Fhrcnlx Bitters,
Then Medicines hatnow bn before tha
public for a period of FIFTEEN YEARS, and
during that time have mnintainod n'lugh charac
ter in almost every part of the globe for their ex
traordinary and immediate power of restoring per
fect health to persons puileriiig under nearly every
kind ofdisea3e to which the human frame ia liable.
IN MANY THOUSANDS
of certificated instances, they have even rescued
sufiererfl from the very vergo of an unUmely
grave, after all the deceptive nostrums of the day,
had utterly failed ; and to many thousands tiicy
have permanently secured that uniform enjoy
ment of health, without which life itself is but
a partial blessing. So -groat, . indeed, has their
efficacy invariably and infallibly proved, that it
has appeared scarcely Ices than miraculous to
hose who were acquainted with the beautifully
philosophical principles upon which they are com
poundJd, and upon which UYey consequently act.
h was o their manifest and sensible .action in
purifying the springs and channels of life, and en
5S them with "renewed tone and vigor, that
thoyVere indebted for their name.
Unlike the host of pernicious quacWswluch
boast of vegetable ingredients, the IJFEmEDI;
cfiES are purely and solely vegetable; and
contahi i neither Mercury, Antimony, nor
Arsenic nor nnv other mineral, m any form
whatever. They" are entirely composed of ex
tracts from rare and powerful plants, tho virtues
of which, though long known to several Indian
tribes, and recently to some eminent pharmaceu
tical chemists, are altogether unknown to the
ignorant pretenders to medical science ; and were
never before administered in so happily oflicacious
a combination.
The first operation is to loosen from the coats
of the stomach and bowels the various impuri
ties and crudities constantly settling round them ;
and to remove the hardened faces which collect
in the convolutions of the small intestines. Other
medicines only partially cleanse these, and leave
such collected masses behind to produce habitual
Costiveness, with all its train of evils, or sudden
Diarrhoea with its imminent dangers. This fact
is well-known to all regular anatomists who ex
amine the human bowels ufter death ; and hence
the prejudice of those well-informed men against
the quack medicines of the age. The 'second
effect of the VEGETABLE LIFE MEDI
CINES is to cleanse the kidneys and the blad
der ; and, by this means, the liver and lungs,
the healthful action of which entirely depends
upon the regularity of the urinary organs. The
blood, which takes its red color from the agency
of the liver and lungs, before it passes into the
heart, being thus purified by them, and nourished
by food coming from a clean stomach, courses
tr0aUr 4hr.Mi.rli thft veins, renews cverv part of
the system, and triumphantly mountB the ban
ner of health in the blooming cheek.
The following are among the distressing va
riety of human diseases in which the VEGE
TABLE LIFE MEDICINES are well known
to be infallible.
DYSPEPSIA, by thoroughly cleansing the
first and second stomachs, and creating a flow of
pure healthy bile, instead of the stnlo and acrid
kind ; Hatulency, Loss of Appetite, Heart
burn, Headache, Restlessness, Ill-Temper,
Anxiety, Languor, and Melancholy, which
are the general symptoms of Dyspepsia, will
vanish, as a natural consequence of its cure,
Costiveness, by cleansing the whole length
of the intestines with a solvent process, and
without violence ; all violent purges leave the
bowels costive within two days.
Diarrhoea and Cholera,, by removing the
sharp acrid fluids by which these, complaints are
occasioned, and by promoting tile lubricative se
eretion of the mucous membrane.
Fevers of all kinds, by restoring the blood to a
regular circulation, through the process of perspi
ration in such cases, antfthe thorough solution of
all intestinal obstruction in others.
The Life Medicines have been known to
cure Ehettmatism permanently in three weeks,
and Gont in half that time, by removing local
inflammation from the muscles and ligaments of
the joints.
Dropsies of all kinds, by freeing and strength
ening the kidneys and bladder : they operate most
delightfully on these important organs, and hence
have ever been found a certain remedy for the
worst cases of Gravel.
Also "Worms, y dislodging from the turnings
of the bowels the slimy matter to which these
creatures adhere. .
Asthma and Consumption, by relieving the
air-vessels of the lungs from the mucous which
eveu slight colds will occasion, and which, if not
removed, becomes hardened, and produces these
dreadful diseases.
Scurvy, Ulcers, and Inveterate Sores, by
the perfect purity which these LIFE MEDI
CINES give to the blood, and all the humors.
Scorbutic Eruptions and Bad Complex
ions by their alterative effect upon the thuds thut
feed the skin, and the morbid state of which occa
sions all eruptive complaints, sallow, cloudy, and
other disagreeable complexions.
The use of these Pills for a very short time
will effect an entire cure of Salt Eneum, and a
striking improvement in the clearness of the skin.
Common Colds and Influenza will always be
cured by one dose, or by two even m the worst
cases.
PILES As a remedy for this most distressing
and obstinate malady, the VEGETABLE LIFE
MEDICINES deserve a distinct and emphatic
recommendation. It is well-known to hundreds
in this city, that the former proprietor of theEo
valuablo Medicines was himself afflicted with this
compaint for upwards of thirty-five years ; and
thut he tried in vain every remedy prescribed
within the whole compass of the Materia Me.dica.
He however at length tried the Medicine which
is now offered to the public, and he was cured in
a very short time, after his recovery had been pro
nounced not only improbable, but absolutely im
possible, by any human means.
FEVER AND AGUE.
For this scourge of the western country these
Medicines will be found a safe, speedy, and cer
tain remedy. Other medicinos leave the system
subject to a return of the disease a cure by these
medicines is permanent TRY THEM, BE
SATISFIED, AND BE CURED.
Bilious Fevers and Liver Complaints.
Goneral Debility, Loss of Appetite, and
Diseases of Females these medicines have been
UBed with the most beneficial results in cases of
this description : King's Evil and Scrofula, in
its worst forms, yields to the mild yet powerful
action of these remarkable Medicines. Night
Sweats, Nervous Debility, Nervous Com
plaints of all kinds, Palpitation of the Heart,
Painter's Colic, are speedily cured.
MERCURIAL DISEASES.
Persons whose constitutions have become un
paired by the injudicious use of Mercury, will
find these Medicines a perfect cure, as they never
fail to eradicate from the system all the effects of
Mercury infinitely sooner than the most powerful
preparations of Sarsaparilia. A angle trial will
pluce them beyond the reach of competition, m
the estimation of every patient.
BE CAREFUL OF COUNTERFEITS. .
Several havo lately been discovered, and their
nefarious authors arrested, both in tho city of New
York and abroad.

Heaven forbid that we should deal in an article which would
bear the most distant resemblance to S. P. Townsend's article f
and which should bring down upon the Old Dr. such a mountain
load of complaints and criminations from Agent who have nlrf,

We wish it understood, because it is the absolute truth, that
S. P. Townsend's article and Old Dr. Jacob Townsend' Sar
saparilia are heancn-icide apart, and infinitely dttsimilar ; that
they are unlike in every particular, havincnotone single thins
in common.
As S. P. Townsend is no doctor, and never was, is no
chemist, no pharmaceutist knows no more of medicine or dis
ease than any other common, unscientific, unprofessional man.
what guarantee can the public have that they are receivine a

articles used in preparing it. and which aro incapable of chances
which might render them the AGENTS of Disease instead of
