Commerce and Agriculture. 1 he po- ! hey which strikes at the pricperity of the ftlanu I facturing consumer, must damage the Agricultural producer, aud neither can be injuriOusFy affected ; without detriment to tiie Merchant, at once con sumer and carrier for bdth. As, however, the ele ments of manufacturing and commercial industry must be derived chiefly from the soil, is it not the obvious interest of all other classes that the one which gives to all their employment and subsist ence, should be encouraged and benefitted with every advantage that science can confer and the most enlightened iudustiy make available! Yet it has not been until comparatively a late period in Europe, and still later in America, that the pub lic mind has been made properly sensible of the necessity of science to Agriculture, and so to re spect Farming as essentially an intellectual and dignified pursuit one which should imply for its followers high mental cultivation and various attainments. Happily, however, educated young men are now betaking themselves to Farming, as a business, which, like the learned professions, has its own principles and will have its literature ; and truly it may be asked what subject has lately given rise to memoirs and works more profound and instructive, or been fruitful of more interest ing results of scientific investigation, than Agri culture 1 Who, among modern Literati, enjoy more enviable distinction than Liehig and John ston, and Doussingatdt and Candolle f The taste for Agricultural Literature in ir country, thanks to the able journals that encourage it, keeps pace with its progress in Europe. The more fully to meet the demand thus created, we have decided to publish on the first day of July, and monthly thereafter, the Farmer's Library and Monthly Journal of Agriculture, to be edited by John S. Skinner, late Assistant Postmaster General and founder of the first Agricultural periodical pub lished in this country. Far from being designed or in any wray calcu lated to affect injuriously the circulation of exist ing journalsof less price and wider circulation, they may supply the Farmer's table with lighter and more agreeable refreshment, while in the Li brary he may may find more solid as it will be more costly food. Each number will consist of two distinct parts, viz. : A NEW BOOT & SHOE ES TA BLISIIMENT. IN PRESS POPULAR LECTUEES ON SCIENCE AT AllT'j DELIVERED IN TIIE CJiicf Cities ami Towns in Hie U. - BY DION YSIUS LARDNER. Doctor of Civil Lsiw. Fellow of the Royal Societies of London: anil Edinburgh. Member of the Universities of Cambridge and Dublin, and formerly Professor of Natural Phi losophy and Astronomy in the University of London, Ac. Ac. The publishers announce that Dr. Lardncr hav ing brought to a close his public Lectures in this country, they have availed themselves of the op portunity thus presented to induce him to prepare for publication a complete and authentic edition of these Discourses. The general interest which for the last four years they have excited in every part of this, country is universally felt and acknowl edged. Probably no public lecturer ever contin ued for the same length of time to collect around him so numerous audiences. Nor has there been any exception to this favorable impression. Visit after visit has been made to all the chief cities, and on evety succeeding occasion audiences a mounting to thousands have assembled to hear aaiii and aeain these lessons of useful knowledge. The same simplicity of language, perspicuity of reasoning, and felicity of illustration, which ren dered the oral discourses so universally accepta ble will be preserved in the published report, which will indeed be, as nearly as possible, identical with the Lectures as they were delivered. The publishers feel that in the volume now pro posed they will present to the American public a most agreeaoie onenng, ana an interesting aim useful miscellany of general information, which. will also afford that large class of persons win have attended the Lectures, an agreeable means of reviving the impressions from which they havo already derived so much profit and pleasure. The subjects which will be. included will em brace a variety of topics in the Astronomical ami Physical Sciences, and in their application to the arts of life. Among these the following may bo mentioned : The Plurality of Worlds; The Sun; The Moon ; The Planets; The Comets; The Solar System; The Atmosphere; Popular Fallacies; Artificial Il lumination; Light; Sound; Electricity; Galvanism; The Bridge Water Lecture; Lunar Influences; Weather Almanacs; Babbage's Calculating Ma chinery; Electric and Magnetic Telegraphs; The Tulescope and Microscope; Galileo; Copernicus; Lavoisier; Newton; The Stellar Universe; Tho Power of Steam; Steam Navigation; Aurora Boro alis; Water Spouts; Thunder and Lighinmu; The ory of D.ew; Heat; The Barometer; The Thermom eter; &c &c. The work will appear in numbers, or parts, will be well printed on good type, and copiously illus trated with engravings on wood. It will be com pleted in ten or twelve numbers, and the emiro volnme will be published within six months. The price will be 25 cents for each number.
