Diez the Murderer. It has not been for
gotten that 'about a month ago, by our readers,
-vve reported a case of murder committed by
one Ferdinando Diez. The horrible circum
stance was yesterday more fully brought to
Ijaht. The body of the unfortunate woman
has been dicovercd, and the evidence against
the miserable murderer is established beyond
question.
In a small back building in Magazine near
Bartholomew street the body of a female, has
been discovered mutilated in a most shocking
manner. It was in this house that Diez was
arrested, and that the heartless wretch after
murdering his wife tn Barrack street cut the
body to pieces, hirediiis house in Magazine
street, and in the night carried the corpse to
his new residence, where he buried it be
neath the floor. The body when discovered
presented a most shocking spectacle. The
legs had been cut off at the hips, and but little
mortification had taken place. It may have
been that the water in which the body lay,
may have prevented the natural course of de
composition, for it was not buried bnt careless
ly concealed beneath the floor, and the offen
sive smell which arose and offended the neigh
borhood led to the discovery. Diez is still in
prison confined for examination. New 'Or
leans Picayune of 5th. of March.
A House asd six Children burnt.
The New York Gazette says :
On Saturday about one o'clock, the house of
Mr. John Astin, in the town of Yonkers, in
Westchester county about one mile from the
village of that name was burned down and six
of his children perished in it by the flames, jl.fr.
Astin with his wife with an infant, and some
of the older children three daughters and a son,
who lodged on the lower floor, escaped the
children lodged on the upper floor. The fire
appears to have originated by accident after the
family had all retired. Five of those who per
ished were between the ages of five and twelve
3'ears, and one was a young man grown, who,
it would seem lost his life in attempting to res
cue the children in the chamber. The four
that escaped, besides the parents with the in
fant were also children- the family consisting
of fourteen children in all, three of whom were
not residing at home. We hare these particu
lars from a gentleman residing io this citv who
during yesterday received his informalfon di
rect from Yonkers. It is one of the moct pain
ful occurrences which for a longtime has fall
en to our lot to record.

General Literature and the Fine Arte: emoellish-
with gorgeous and costly engravings on steel, anrl
le Ouarty.ny laamons ; ana also with i'ashioua-
ble and popular Music, arranged lor the i'iano-
orte, and t.u.t.ir.
Sinco the t ubliraiion of the number for Novem
ber, the demand for the Ladies' Companion has
been unprecedented and beyond the most sanguine
anticipations. At the commencement of the vol
ume an additional number of copies were printed,
which was considered at the time adequate to s n-
tisfy all the orders which might be-received, and
eave a considerable number on iiand lor subse
quent calls. The publisher is more than gratified
in stating that the whole of an edition of six thou
sand, five hundred copies, was completely exhaus
ted before the issuing of the third number of the
volume; and, consequently, he vv as compelled to
reprint a second edition of two thousand conies,
miming me uiruuuuion oi mo jaaies companion
eight thousand five hundred, at the termination of
the tenth volume. In consequence of this great
and unparalleled increase of new subscribers, he
has oetermmed to commence the new volume for
the onsuing year with thirteen thousand : honinp-
that he will thus be enabled to supply all the de
mands for the Ladies' Companion, as well as those
disappointed in commencing with the tenth vol
ume. The proprietor feels jnrateful for that en
couragement which has been so lavishly bestowed
upon his magazine, and at the tame time he bogs
to assure the readers of the Ladies' Companion,
that it is determined resolution to meet it with a
corresponding liberality to merit its continuance.
The work appears in beautiful new type, printed
.U- A". . .1.1 1 1 J . 9
on inc unusi pupui Muuuimy presseu, ana ncany
stitched in a handsome cover.
The Ladies' Companion contains a largerVquan-
tity of reading than any other magazinejssued in
in this country, and its subscription price is only
three dollars a year, while the great combination
of talent secured for the coming year will render
it unequalled by any other periodical.
Splendid Steel Engravings, prepared by Mr. A.
Dick, ornament the work one of which accoinoa-
nies each number. These plates are entirely new,
and are engraved at a heavy expense by one of the
best arstists in America, expressly ior the maga
zine. The desicris are selected with a view oi in
teresting the general reader, and enhancing the
value of the work, for its superior pictoral embel
lishments. It is with pride the proprietor announ
ces that the Ladies' Companion is the only maga
zine published, in which new and elegant steel
plates appear regularly. Those accompanying -other
monthly periodicals, are generally first worn
out in annuals. In addition to the engravings
mentioned, a correct plate of the Quarterly Fash
ions for Ladies, will appear in the June, Septem
ber, December, and March numbers, independent
of the usual embellishment. It is the determina
tion of the proprietor, that these fashion plates
shall appear in a style hitherto unknown. It lite
rary character will undergo no change, as it will
remain under the charge of the same Editors a.i
heretofore. Articles Irom the pens of the mosi
distinguished writers, will appear in the forthcom
ing numbers, among which may be enumerated tho
following: Mrs. Holland, Emma C. .Embury,

The Musical Department of the Ladies' Compa
nion has ever commanded a large share of atten
tion, and has been looked upon with no little in
terest by its readers, and more especially the La
dies, whom the publisher is anxious to please. It
will continue to be a subject of more than usual
care to him, and to the Professor under whose su
pervision it is placed, to make that portion of tho
magazine deserving of the countenance of every
lover of music.
Tac Work-in General. Of ever' department an
equally careful supervision will be strictl;- exer
cised by the Editors, and all appropriate expendi
tures will be liberally bestowed, as it is the de
sign of the publisher, with the aid of his contribu
tors and the advice of his friends to make the La
dies Companion distinguished for the byauty and
accuracy of its typography, the variety and high
tone of its literary articles, the quality and value
of its music, and" the unequal splendor of its pic
toral embellishments, and the accuracy of its quar
terly fashions. The proprietor pledges himself to
use all honorable means to maintain the superiori
ty which the Ladies' Companion has obtained.
For five years he has steadily pursued a course of
improvement, and he Hatters himself that his pre
sent facilities are such as to give the work eminent
advantages over ali other publications.
From the foregoing it will be perceived that tho
Ladies' Companion embraces every department
within the range of Belles-Lettres and the-Pino
Arts : and no exertions or oxpense will be deemed
too great to render the work equal to any-other
extant. The flattering and general testimonials
of nearly every contemporary journal in the United
States, and in fact, many on the other side of tho
Atlantic, have strongly asserted, the undeniable
claims of tho Ladies' Companion lo the support of
the public'generally. There is no work that gives
