FINAL REST.
THZ DOORS OPMCED.

file: Four of their number bore a floral
offering in the slutpe of an immense
Maltese arose, which was plaoed at the
head of the dais.
,
At bin minutes past two the Army of
the Cumberland filed in and took their
seat& —The doors' were then thrown
open to all holders of lieltehr.--, Th
chairs for the general' -:publie we
quickly filled. Soon the members of
the Diplomatio Corps were ushered to
the, seats reserved fct , hem.
t I
The mile portion o the process
ion, which will,_.ort t e remains to
the depot, formed facing the east front
of the Capitol at quarter past two, with
'the District militia holding the right of
line.
At five minutes before throe, Presi•
dent . Arthur, leaning on the arm -of
Secretary Blaine, entered the rotunda
from the Senate side of the 'Capitol
Immediately after- following ex-Presi
dents Grant and Hayes, Secretary and
Mrs. Lincoln, Secretary and Mrs. Hunt,
Attorney-General and Mrs. MacVeagh,
Secretary Kirkwood and Postmaster
General Jame.i.
Mrs. Garfield and her immedia -
family were not present at the cere
monies. Some confusion in seating
ihepiplomatic Corps and representa
tives of the Army and Navy, and Sena
;)rs and members of the- House, was
occasioned_ by-an oversight not re
serving enough seats. Many'-persona
eluded the door keepers_and gained ad
, mission to - the rotunda, while many
who held tickets were unable to find
seats.
When President Arthur entered the
rotunda, the vast assemblage
.-rose as a
mark of respect:
THE 'CREEMONIES.
At three, every seat was filled and all
available standing room was occupied.
Bev. Dr. Powers ascended the dais and
announced the opening hymn, "Asleep
in Jesus, Blessed Sleep," which was
rendered by a chorus of fifty voices.
•
THE SCEEETTIRAL SERVICE.
After the opening hymn, "Asleep in
Jesus," had been beautifully rendered
by the volunteer choir, Bev. Dr. Ban
kin ascended the platform at the head
of the catafalque and read scriptural
selections, among which were the fol
_ lowing: The Lord reignetth—Fl...
have lifted up their voices. The Lord
on high is mightier than the voice o
many . watera Clouds and darkness are
round about Him, righteousness and
judgment are the habitation of His
throne. By Him kings reign and urin-
ces decree justice. He changeth th
time and seasons. He removed' kings
and setteth up kings. For there is no
power bat of God. Whosoever there
fore reaisteth °power, resisteth the ordi
nance of God, and they that resist shall
recieve to themselves damnation ; Tlf;
Lord of Hosts doth take away _from
Jerusalem and from Judea a mighty
man, a man of war, a nhonomble man
and a councellor and elequent orator.
There is no man that bath power over
the spirit to retain:the spirit. Neither
bath he. power in the day of death, and
there is no dischaige in that war. Then
shall he be at rest with the kings and
councellors of the earth, which built
desolate places for themselves. The
clods of the valley shall be sweet unto
him, and every man shall draw after
him as there are innumerable before
him. .Thera the wicked cease from
troubling and there the weary be at rest.
Jesus said, to him that overcometh will
I grant to sit with me on my Throne,
• even as I also overcome land sat down
with my . Father on His Throne. It is
enough for a discile that he be as his
• Master, and a servant as his Lord. Let
not your hearts be troubled. Ye be
lieve in God, believe also in me. I will
not leave you comfort less. I will come
to you. Leave thy fatherless children,
.1 will preserve them alive, and let -thy
widow trust in me. For it -we believe
that Jesus died and rose again, even: so
them also that sleep in Jesus will God
bring with him. The Lord gave, tb •
Lord bath taken away; blessed be the
name of the Lord.

he said; "liaised by the voice of the
