    FARM AND GARDEX
STORING AND FEEDING FODDER-COEN.
--Mr. J. Talcott, Rome, N.• Y., corn:
nmnicates _to the Anzerlaut Cultivator
this estimate - of the value of corn-fodder,
and,his method of feeding it, based on
an experience covering many yesrs:
"To have corn grown for feeding to
farm stock of all kinds in its green
state, and especially to , milch OWE,. I
prefer to grow it thinly so that the ears
shall be freely developed, and when the
ears are fit for boiling as green corn for
family use, then to begin to cat the
fodder and feed to dairy cows and work
ing osetii=d, in fact. to all kinds of
farm stod Dairy cows and working
oxen will eat their rations from the
whole corn, but horses and calves need
to have their supply run through a cut
ting machine, , in order that they, may
not waste' iny of the stalks and eat aIl
clean. I Gave kept my working oxen
in the stale on corn thus grown f.:r a
number of' years past. and have found n 9
feed that I think is of.eqaal value sirlwn
on so little land. I can begin to feed
the last of July. and continue the green
feed until frost comes. After that I
have continued the same feed dried,
into the month of December. In order
to haveencrossion of corn for fodder
plant early corn for the first feeding,
and the larger and later sorts for the
late feeding, and before frost comes cut
all and pat instooks in the field, taking
care to have the stooks well put up and
well tied with two bands at the top, the
tops being turned down so that the up
per band is bound round the tops thus
turned down, in order to shed all rains
effectually. All my fodder corn is cut
'soon after the ears reach the boiling
stsge."
The report of the success , and meth
ods of Mr. J. L. Browning, Lake Wac-
Cabnc, N. in.curing end feeding
the crop appears as fuilows in the
Chatham Co n urier:
"I had fiften, iteres the, past season,
which I cut and put in stooks about the
same size as hill corn is made into. I
left them to cure a little for two weeks,
then carted the whole in. I could very
readily wring the juice from the dryest
of it when carted in. Three sides of
the mow were sided with match siding.
Between every second load I put front
400 4 fOO pounds of . oat straw. When
stowing away I was particular to have
that which was the least cures in the
centre of the mow. When the mow was
filled 4 I put , a good load of straw on top.
Thud !winter all came out in the very
best condition, both green and moist;
both were eaten' more readily by stock
than the best .of hay. When I changed
from the feeding of these stalks to No.
1 hay I found that I did not get nearly
as much milk and butter. I do' not
feed the stalks without cutting. There
• is great 'economy in this way of feeding,
as the-remaining portion of 'hill corn
makes goetbedding. I use Cumin's
cutter; *blob cuts any desired length
and else criehes."
BARR TREATY:IMT OF APPLE TREES.--;
Of the advisability of washing the
bodies of apple trees there can be no
question; but we should not place too
machreliance npon this practice and
thus neglect the more important things
00"
soil. As a rule, when we see trees coat
, ed with moss and fungris, with the balk
hanging in locisS patches or infested with
lice, ive can look for the cause in im
proper or no culture or want of manure,
but when we find trees in this condition
we cat 6 much sooner restore them to
health land vigor by applying a suitable
washtobject to all the potash washes
for akal trees because, 'while they will
kill raOsE . and remove :the loose bark,
they ste m to burn the tender bark ha
find make it of an unnatural, red
dish ciilor, and it again soon cracks -or
scales AP and liaugs loosely upon the
tree.
NOt ill° Nvhen we use a wash, made
with•caiistiO soda. While this takes off
all moss patches. fungus and rough
bark, it will kill all kinds of
bark line and insects equally with the
poise b washes, it leaves the smooth bark
a - fine idalthy green color and notin
clinedlilo break loose from the tree. If
one ca not , get caustic take Antacids, .pat
it into' an,trim kettle, placed over a fire
and Mt eremain, occasionally stirring
until it turns of a reddish color, which
it wail/hen sufficiently heated. It will
thus becothe caustic and answer very
wOl in plane of the caustic soda of: the
shcips. awnahing does not effectively
remove all loose bark, I would use an
old hod o tree Scraper to remove all
loose bark?. I have occasionally seen
orchards " - Scrape' d hard enough to re
move the outer bark and show large
spots of white 'bark. This I regard as
a very bad practice and not to be allow-
I repeat; if an orchard is properly
inan'ured :and occasionally washed it wil
'have vary little loose. bark, and will re
;quire scarcely any scraping.—Cor. N.

BE. ICITIN or OWNING Lank—That
there is an-', ativantage to a country in
having - a liggO number of land owncirs
is shown by the fact that in- France
and Switzerland. where, th+ land is di.:
'idea among numerous
. IhiDlders. the
people are more contented 'than they'
are in ether countries. 'According to
M. de Lavergne, of 7,600;000 beads of
families in France, 5,500.000 are
owners of land. two-thiids. of whom
cultivate their own lands. In Switzer
land, of 550,000 heads of hultilies 465,-
000 are poseased of land 441 property.
In'Sweden, of 850,000 families, 200,
006 are land owners. In the United
States, of 7.208,000 heads of families,
2,600,000 own and farm their own lands.
In - England, of• 5,400,000 heads of
. 7 fimilies, only one out of 26 is an
mimes of land. In Ireland, a purely
eountry, and a country of
sruali peasant holdbiga, only one head
of a family out of every 52 is an owner
of land; and in Scotland the dispropor
tion is still greater, for only one family
in 84 is endowed With land. The fig
; tires - from France showing there more
amsll, land owners than in any i other
country, probably explain the wonder
ful viwer of recuperation : shown by
that nation after the German war.
WHAT Som Is.—Vhe following in
teresting extract we take from the
Southern Plcmter: "We have seen that
everything on the earth's suffuse ex
posed,to the influence of air, water,
light, and beat loses cohesoin and crum
blee do arn, and we call this decay.
This occurs with rocks, and the pro
duct of this decay, when it comes to
be mixed with the remains of vegetables
and animals; constitute soil. The black
matter of the soil' with which the earth
is covered, from inches to- feet, is the
production of animals and plants, and
is not formed in any other , way. Its
constituents are made 'from the pro
ducts of the = decomposition •of orga
nized beings, and wherever found,
they have been produced by the , con
densation of substances from the atmos
phere through the ' intervention of
plants and animals. The soil, there
fore, is the intermediate ; link between
the' atmosphere on the one hand, and
plants and animals on the other. By
the condensation of the four , elements,
carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxy
gen, from the atmosphere upon, the
earth, daring the first growth of plants,
and by the continual increase of this
condensation in living plants, and. by
the production thereby *of the black
organic substance we find in the ground,
this black substance has been intimate
ly mixed with the product of decaying
rocks, so that we have a mixture of or
ganic and inorganic material to form
the soil those substaces derived
from the mineral kingdom being called
inorganic, whilst those produced by
vegetables and ' animals are called
organic."
Superintendent Luckey, of Pittsburg,
says that how, best to teach, children
the correct use of the Fnglish language
is one of the unsolved problems of the
age, and adds that children iu the pri
mary departments should be required
to talk much, and their errors should
be carefully corrected by the teacher.
He suggests that each pupil should be
aiva n short description
'each day of something ho nas seen
his way to or from school, or to r epeat w
in his own words' a short story pre
vionsly read aloud
• by the teacher.
Mr. Luckey thinks that the grammar
department pupils should be obliged
to write a great deal, especially letters.
And with great good sense he _suggests
that in the upper grades the teaching
of geography and,bistory be conducted
in connection' with current events.
"For example," he says let the daily
paper be judiciously called by the
teacher, and the principal itsins_cd-looal,
national and foreign news phieed 'on
the blackboard and discussed by the
teacher, while the pupils locate upon
their maps the several places referred
to.. By this means the pupil is famil
iarized with the main events transpir
ing in the great world that lies, outside
and beyond all text-books and play
grounds. The pupil who has traced
out upon his map the proposed route
of. the Nicaraguan Canal finds an inter
est in'veography which does not usu
ally attach to "a cape, an isthmus, or an
archipeligo, and so on. This exercise
brings into play all the mental facul
tiei" of the pupil; his powers= of obser
vation are trained; his thinking be
comes accurate; he beging to form
opinions, and, grasping generalities,
he is not confined to details; Its facul
ties for acquiring inforination are no
longer circumcised by the four walls of
the schoolroom, but he reacheti :out;
and in hie acquaintance with the World,
become 3 a cosmopolitan. The use of
the daily paper as a text-book, in the
bands of. the teacher, cannot, in my
opinion, be overestimated." • • '

covered my entire person in form of dry. scales.
For the last three years I ban been unable to
do any labor, and suffering intensely all the
time. Every morning there could be nearly a
dustpauffil of scales taken from the sheet on my .

containing this letter. In the latter part of t
winter my akin commenced cracking open. I
tried everything, almost, that could be thought
of, without any retie! The 12th of Jane I -
started West, in hopes I could reach the Hot

thought I should have to go to the hospital but
finally got as far as Lansing, Mich., where I bad
