Welles, of this place and her friend Mrs. Moore, of Qnincey, 111., were driv ing in al, buggy down Elizabeth street, on Wednesday morning, they lost control of the horso between Second and Third streets, and in making" the turn at the corner of Second, the wagon capeised and threw theist both out. Mrs. Welles was severely bruised and badly jarred by the shock. Mrs. Moore came off with slight injury. On the whcde they made a fortunate escape. Excursion to Watkins, Aug. 16,•1881. Struck ?y Lightning.—Bain and Contents Consisimed One of the must terrific thunder, lightning and rain storms expertenCed• here for many years, swept over this place on Friday even ing last. Its violent duration was about one :hour, and a half, from 9to 10% o'clock. Tho sky seemed ablaze with lurid flame, while tho rain fell . in torrents and the thunder was a continuous terrific crashing. In the midsd of the r‘torm au alarm of tire' was sounded; and 'soon between the lightning flashes brilliant flame lit up the sky. A bolt had struck the large and well filled farm barn be longing to Miter Fox on big farm on the flat just south of the borough line. The destruc tion was quick and complete. The barn, a large quantity of wheat, oats and .hay, one horse,•sowe hogs,-a wagon and lot of farming utensils were lost. Charles Cummings, a tenuant on the farm was 'the lctser of One-half the contents of the barn, o.ao horse, wagon and farming utensils. • Mr. Fox loses the barn and half the contents. The loss is partially covered by insurance as follows: Mr. Fox on barn $BOO, on his share of .contents44oo. Mr. Cummings on his share of contente44oo, op horse $lOO. The insurance is in C. S. Lightning's Doings. • The large new residence of J. F. Greene, near Greene's Landing in Athens township was struck by lightning on Saturday last during the storm, which prevailed in the afternoon. The current demolished the chimney and ruching a, heavy cross-sUI in the cellar seemed to have burst, parts going upward through the floor and others shiver ing a heavy post. A stove lid was lifted off and some wainscoting removed in the sitting room, from which IV. G., had just retired, and the path of the fluid was visible around a ,sewing machine, beneath which lay a cat. The cat did mot revive until Sunday. A little girl was standing near the spot torn up in the floor and yesterday complained of being very lame from the shock. During the storm on Friday evening last a large barn belonging to- Russel Coleman .at Cold Creek - elm the Wyalnsing above Camp town, filled with hay and grain was blown down with such force as to break the timbers in pieces. - Apple trees about the barkwere uprooted and blown over. ,The wind swept over a timber lot belonging to Russel Cole man and prostrated much valuable . ..timber. It also swept across the premises of'Thomas Peat, demolishing shade trees, and prostrat ing fences in its path. While repairing fence along a back field, be stepped upon a pole lying np several feet from the Round which broke suddenly, precipitat ing him down upon a sharp knot on a hem lock log. The knot penetrated the lower part of his oody and wounding him so badly that it was necessary to call a physician to sew up and dress the wound.
