fruits that require extia skill in graft
ing, but which are budded with ease.
Budding is done duiing r the growing
sotson. Juue budding, especially on
the peach and nectarine, is practiced
in the South, but istiot advised in the
moreierthern - States. The ordinary
I)olli:ling . :season extends at the North
from about the middle of July until the
middle of September, and the earliness
or lateness at which a species is budded
depends, other things bring equal,"on
the condition of its grorh. The time'
for budding therefore Xcpends also up
on the weather. In a warm, dry Ee3"
Son the young wood matures earlier
and stocks, cease to grow sooner and
are in consequence ready for budding
earlier than in a cool, moist season
that prolongs the growth of the stocks
and retards the maturity of the bud&
-Stocks making feeble growth-require
to be budded - earlier than those that
grow freely.
To sum up briefly, bud early all trees
that accomplish their growth early in
the season and defer the . operation on.
such as continue to grow until the au
tumn. The tree must grow long
enough after the bud is set to unite
the bud with the tree, but not long
enough to admit of the
: formation cf
new layers of wood over the bud and
destroy it or force it into. a premature
growth late in the season. In rill sec
tions of the country and in no cases
for successful respite in budding, the
buds to : beiriserted must be perfectly
(.1 . E . ;-elniied in' the . ails of the leaVea
on the young shoots and. the bark
inr4t raise freely fiom the stocks to
receive them.
Budding is usually ierfortned on
trees from one to five years old with a
hmoo th, soft bark. Strong yearly
seedlings of the apple, pear, cherry
and plum, ; also well-rooted layers of
the, quince, planted in good Foil durin:
the spring, are often in a proper con
dition.for budding in July, August or
September following. Seedling trees
exhibit a great difference as regards
thrifty growth, therefore it 'is always
wise to select for propogation stn on
ly as show indications of health. Many
orchardists reject all apple stocks that
are not_large enough to bud . the sec
ond year.
Any lateral shoots from the stock
likely to obstruct the insertion of the
bud can be removed at time of budding.
Asa rule; low budding makes the. best
. trees, and dwarf stocks ought always to
be budded as close to the surface of the
ground as possible. • With rapid, late
growing and tender - ,varieties, in sec
tions of country where there is danger
of their being winter-killed if budded
too near-.the giound, it - is advised to
bud high when a hardy stock can be
obtaihed.
The process of budding cannot be
intelligibly described without cuts,
therefore any man or woman who pro
poses to cultivate trees, shrubs or plants
ought to learn the art either by watch
ing an experi.—tho better plan—or by a
careful study of an illustrated descrip
tion of the operation to be found in
such valuable works as Barry's ."Fruit
Oarden.",
Shield or T-budding is an improved
mode. For this the incision made in
the bark of the stock is in: the form of
the letter T. The bark. is seperated
from the wood with tge ivory end of a
budding khife and the bud pressed in
place. The The upper end of the -''bark
attached to the bud is cat square, to fit
to the horizontal cut on the stock, and
bass string, cotton wicking' or other
suitable material is then wound around
tightly, beginning at the bottom and
covering every part of the incision,
leaving the bud itself antljthe leafstalk
uncovered. The string fs - fastened
obove the horizontal era and the work
is completed. The SUCCCB9 of budding
depends largely on smooth cuts, and ex
act fit of the Ludt() the incision made
fur it, and secure tying that will exclude
air and rain; One great difficulty ex
perfeuced by beginner' is the proper
removal of the btid, but a little practice
will obviate this. By the'\ w a y, care
. should be obserted .to keep the buds
moist and protected from the sum and
air until set. When a' considerable
qultutity is cut at one time they may be
preserved by wrapping in dainp clothes
or placing in moist sawdust.
In about tin days or a fortnight after
budding its success or failure will be
apparaiii. If it has succeeded and the
stock is swollen, loosen or remove the
bandage. if it has failed and the bark
continues to seperate readily from t t he
wood, a second - trial can be made. jn
some cases, notably with cherry steals,
it is necessary to loosen the bandage
and retie it, as rapid growth - causes fig;
: string to cut the bark before the bud 'is
fit to be united, This, 'however, does
not usually occur. As a rule the string'
is removed in from two weeks to.
month after budding. All bandages
should be removed tidally and uut re
main on daring the winter.
Stocks budded one season are head.•,l
down to - within a few inches of the bad
the next sea-am, about the time the'
leaveri begin to appear, and all buds
starting into growth on the stock are
rubbed off. Later off, the ',onion of
the stuck left above the bud at the
heading do,su in the spring sl:ould he .
removed with a close and smooth slop
ing cut, at the highest point of union
between the bud and stock.—N.fs

Why You Snore.
Dr. Lewis Sayre heing asked by. a
reporter -why people snore, gave this
lucid expla.nation of the cause:
"Snoring is a noise made in the pos
terior part of the mouth and nasal fosse
during the moments of inspiration. It
is due to a 'relaxation tof the levator
paluti moills and the circumflaus paluli
in sleep, by which the Velum pendulum
palali is left free to vibrate or flap
in the two currents of the air which en
ter at the same time tbinugh the nos
trils and the month. , Besides the vibra
tion of the velum pendulum, palali or
soft palate,. there is also a vibration of
the column of uir.itself. Thus is pro
duced the' rasping, snoring noise so
well known and so unpleasant to - every
one within earshot of the placid snorer
himself. When a man is fatigued, and
his self-control is usually relaxed in
I sleep, he-is apt to let his lower jaw drop
I down. No man was ever seen, or heard
to snore with his mouth shut. 'The
moral is obvious. The soft palate flaps
like a sheet in the wind, and the, near
neighbors of the snoring sleeper are
correspondingly disturbed. NoW, the
Indians never - snore. They think tt
disgrace.. An Indian believes that if he
snores when he is young he - will grow
up to be even less handsome at maturity
than nature originally.intended. Hie
vanity, therefore, is enonglaq Make a
savage sleep in a proper-position.
The moral is obvious.) Close. your
mouth and your velum pendulum pubei
will not flap.

B. J. KINDALL • Co., Gents:—l wish to add my,
testimony in-favor of your invaluable liniment.
"Kendall'. Fpavin Cure." In the spring of 1868
I slipped on the ice and sprained my rightlimb
at the knee joint. I was very lame and at- times
suffered ;he., most excruciating pain. 1 wore a
bandage on it for a year, and tried, most-every
thing in my reach, but could find nothing that
would give me permanent relief. When 1 over
worked, it would pain me very much. In April
1818 I began to think I . should be a cripple for
Mt-but having some of "Kendall's Spavin Cure"
thought I would try it. . -I used one third of -a
bottle, arid experienced relief at once. The pain
left me and. has not troubled'me since. I feel
very grateful to you and would ' recommend
"Kendall's Elpavin Cure" to - al who suffer with
sprains or rheumatism. .
