memory - of the departed statesmen, Hen
ry Clay and Daniel Webster.
The financial affairs of. the . Common
,
wealth are represented, o be in a prosper
ous 'condition. The balance in. the Stete
Treasury the" Ist of December, 1864,
is; stated ,at • $671;037.72. The receipts
to the Treasury for , the coining ye tare
estimated - at $4,626,400. To this turd
balance on hand, audit gives $5 297,537,-
72 as—the whole means of the Treasury
for '1853. -The ordinary expenditures for
the same period, are estimated at $4,028,-
679,-which will leave a • balance in the
Treasury, on = the Ist day of December,
.1853, 0f.51,271,208. 4 _
The Governor states 'that he has her-_
rowed, oathe faith of the Comnionwealth,
$850,000, for the completion of the North
BranCh Canal, at the rates of interest of
4. and.s per cent. •
in compliance with the Act , of. the 4th
of May, 1852, the Governor, State Treas
.. arer, and Auditor General, proceeded to
snake , a loan of $5,000,000. Only $3,510,-
-1000 of this amount was bid 'fort which is
:attributed to the misunderstanding with
Great Britain on the Fishery questien.—
The financial operations of , the year have
