time to 4. dertairi degree ; bat regarding the
cultivatibn of Mei-land, there are certain
Inviolable principles which should always •e.
kept in +iew ; and these I will endeavor to
enumerate. The first that strikes me is tie
.clearing jof the ground ; it is absurd to think
of trying to grOwi grain under trees in; a
wood, n?or is it s 'cient to take away part
•
of them ? —I - mean of course., with the idea
of -perfection. f:lkir instance, suppose yOu
have fifty tree on au acre; that, is about
one to eery three isquare rods; the soil Ua
pable ofjoearing
.fifty bushels of wheat, pr
one bushel to each tree; and suppose that
you cut , down forty-nine of •them, you will
only be able to ',grow forty-nine bushels, in
stead of ft. fty; the , annual waste or :cost jof
that tree being the value of one husheliof
wheat, orWhateverlcrop might have been bn
the three rods of ground which that tree
monopolized. Therefore, if it is .nemisary to
clear the ;land before vou can grow grain, ;it
is reasonable and 'Self-evident that.itAcouLLi

leave doing injury in its degree. .
The next point to noticeis the dryness or
wetness of 'the soil ' 7 see if the stagnant water
is sufliciemly • near the surface to do injury
to the c4)ps, eien b capillary attraction,
which, science tells us, will raise water four
feet, and 1 practied , has shown that*, -must
not be nearer; therefore, if the stagnant
water be: nearer than four feet,, drain it to
that depth, It is, absurd to attempt to euni
! sate land' against so powerful an enemy as
I water. Thirdly we consider '' the pul veriia-
I tion ,
of the soil? 'Ought it to be pulverized
I 'at all ! To thislqiinstiOn I think our common
I sense will give an answer in the afhrniative,
I
' so that the plant may more easily expand its
roots to-Seek for nourishment in the soil,
; and whieti pulverilation Should extend as far
as the roots of the plants ; but it is common
i sense to think that five or six inches Only is
the distance that the roots of , lplants extend
I will riot; a
take advantage of few facts that
have been noticed of the immense' depths
that tool descend, but merely appeal
,to
common ; nse;' and ask whether it is not
reasonable o suppose that the roots beneath
ts ii
extend as' ras -the plants 'above the soil;
and, if s4,ought not the soil to be puiverized•
to that extent, viz., ab3ut four feet I i , i '
The first expense of this, 1 ,- ,.arti aware, ren
der' it alniost iMpracticable; 'but this I can
not help. ; ' I n)1.10t, assert,Withleernmon sense
that the deeper you pulverize, the more you
