TROUBLE AT "THE CORNERS"
.
'squire Bover Kevingone . hentz we hed,to
elect a Justis to till his place, find in the Con
venshuu Detkin Pogram and, Abslum Pettus
wuz the candidates'. Pettus developed a good
deal uv strength, but the Deekin Lavin invited
the Couvenshun out to take siithin, it . turned
[the scale and he wuz nominated. Pettus swore
be wood never stand that kind of tactics, and
he declared himself an independent candidate,
'lit which we laft, for the Dimocrisy uv the
Corners aril firm helievers , in the sanctity uv
regler nennashuns.
The Radf-i.els, most niggers, hedid by Pollock
and Bigler, met and resolved to make no nomi
nasheu, and so the conte s t wuz between the
good old Deekin and this wretChed, disOrganiz
in Pettus, and a very lively canvass it .w.uz. •
The niggers called a meetin, which perceed
ed in filled us with astonishinent. Bich a thing
had never happened here before, and we all
wondered wat it ment.
"Dv' course this can't be permitted !" said
.the Deekin. • -
"Not any," sez L "It's agin nacher, and
..must be prevented."
And so on the nite uv the meetin, Issaker,
Capt. 3lcPelter, and the rest uv the faithful
went to the hall over Pollock's store, where
the niggers wuz in session, and, pullin our, re
volver, advised them to git. The niggera didn't
git tot up sprun,lPettus and about a dozennv
his friends and made sum few remarks. '
"Thescgentleman," sez Pettus, "is citizens uv
the 1 oouited States, and ez sich hev a rite to
meet and consult ez to the condilin uv our
common country. They are a goin 'to do it,
or you have me to fite ez well ez them.. This
thing is played out."
I wuz struck dum with astonisbment.
"Why, this is revolushen ! This is anarky !
This is a upturnin and an.upheevle ! The idee
uv a white man and Dimekart a sidin with
niggers and Radikels 1. Pettus, what do you
mean ? Set down sir ! TheDirnekratic party
holds you to your allegianse."
• "D- 7 -n the Dimekratic party," wuz the reply
uv this infidle. "I want to be justis and I'm
a goin to be I I perpose to beat that old suck
er."
The niggers held their meetin and resolved
to cast th6ir ballots for :0816m Pettus. Esq.
"Will they be allowed to ,vote ?" asks the
Deekin, his voice quivering with emoshum.
"Never," sed L "Ef they vote then chaps
comes again."
The eleckshun was held last Monday'. Early
in the mornin Pettus and a dozen or two uv
renegade Dimokrits, with Pollock and that in
famous Joe Bigler, all uv em with revolvers,
wuz on hand when the polls wuz opened, with
more than a hundred niggers. Instid uv hav
in Bascom and McPelter for the
Board, which hez bin the custom for years,
they insisted upon bein represented theirselves,
and'uz_they,wuz largely in the majority they
put a nigger 011 the Board.
The Dimocriay rallied, but it wuz evident
they wuz demoralized. Pettus , talked all day
about the rites uv all citizens to vote and ez
the nigger had been made citizens he swore
they shood - vote, or he'd know the reason why,
espeshelly ez they wuz all a votin for him.—
Ind Pollock and Bigler backed him , up, and
the niggers took heart, heyin support from so
many white men, and they come in in droves,
and voted ez naterally ez tho they lied bin aliuz.
yoosed to it.
And ez we hed no chance to do the countin
by ourselves, owin to that nigger's bein on the
Board, with Pettus and Bigler. standing right..
behind him, the onary cuss wuz declaryd elect
id, and Deekin Pogram defected by a large ma
jority.
This is.the end uv all, things. F'ettus'heZ ,
dared for the Administrashert uv the yooserper
Hayes, and hez changed, his headquar tem to'
Bascum's store, and there he and .his minyuns
meet ever) nite;,and exult over his triumph..
But it doesn't end here. haaker Gavin kick;
ed a nigger yesterday, and the 'nigger hauled
him up afore Squire - Pettus, and, that onteelin •
man fined Issaker, and when. IsSaker refoosed.
to pay the fine on the ground that a. court
elected by niggers coolleuf possibly be, con
stooslinel, nohOw, he chucked him into the Cal
