4th, has received the sentence of death.
The day of his execution has not:let
been fixed. '
Mr. Fred Simon of Scranton, gave over
twn hundred tons of coal to the poor of
the Eleventh and Twelfth wards of that
city during the month ,of January. All
honor to his liberality.
Luzeriie county, was named in honor
of the Chevalier de tuzerne, for four
years minister of France to the United
States, and whose portrait may he seen in .
Independence Hall, Philadelphia.
John Seybert, who was arrested near
Berwick, and imprisoned in, the Colum
bia county jail, on a charge of stealing
horses and mules, killing them and sell
ing their meet as beef, some weeks, ago,
has made his escape from jail. •
Charles and Walter French, of She ,
shequin, Bradford county; have been
Arrested for passing counterfeit money.
They are in Towanda jail, awaiting the
next session of U. S. Court at Williams
port.
. While Luzefue county's• late treasurer
is being prosecuted for tailing to pay the
State its dues, it is discoNired that a for- -
mer treasurer paid the State nearly $4,
000 too much, the amount being paid
by him after it had been paid by his
deputy.
The Lackawanna Iron & Coal Com-
parry's blast furnace No. 1 made during
1876, 10,017 tons best quality Bessemer
iron for use in, the company's steel works,
which the Republican says is believed to ,
be the largest and best run made in the
United States by,any anthracite furnace
during the same twelve months.
— The old Lavcock Hotel' at Wyomitig,
was destroyed by fire last Saturday night,
with its contents,_the boarders and family
losing nearly everything in the building.
The building was owned by Mrs. S.R.
Layeock:, and was insured for $3,000.
The hotel was kept by Mr. J. Mooney,
who had as insurance of $1,200 on fur
niture, &c.
A decision was rendered in the Stevens
Church suit, involving the valuable prop
erty now in posession, of Mrs. Joseph -
Church at Church's corners, Providence,
_ •at Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday adverse to
;,the title ot - Mi. Church to the estate.
The case has been at law for. upwards of
ten years.*
Since the Mayor voted the fire depart
ment ordinance, the Crystal Hose and
other fire companies who withdrew from
the department, have returned and organ
ized. There is still, however,- a spilt in
the department on. the chief engineer
question, the Crystals recognizing H. F.
Ferber, as chief, while the Nay Augs re

The boretigh authorities at Womeladorf,
Berko county, have decided - not to collect
any borough tax 'this year. They -have
enough'money in the treasury to carry

Thieves_ recently entered two barns in
Berks county on the same night, killing
calf in one and a. fat heifer in the other.
The carcasses were dressed on the spot
and carried away, the offal being left to
inform the owners of the fate of their
stock. ' -
•It seems to be a higher crime in Blair
county to Steal a cow than to kill a demo
crat. George Williamson, convicted of the
larceny of a cow, nas been sentenced to
the penitentiary for. two years and a half,
and Isaac Lantz, who killed a democrat,
got two years and, one month.
Luzerne county has 'within her borders
586 miles of railroad track, (steam) of
which 3641 are main and 2111 sidings.
This is-considerably more than any other
- county in the State. Schuylkill comes
next in the category having 282 k of main
and 225 of sidings. The other counties.
in whole or in part included in the coal
region are possessed of tracks as follows.:

Young Joshua Sears, of Boston, was
charged $50,000 by his lawyers for their
services in obtaining an interpietation of
his father's will. The bill was omprom
ised by the payment of $25,000.
Parties are now in Washington apply
ing for the pardon of Tom Ballard, the
notorious counterfeiter. If ' his - pardon
cannot be secured, efforts, will be made
for the remission of part of his sentence,
which is thirty years' imprieoment. Ap
plication is also making for the pardon
of the 'counterfeiters Wilso'n Riggs and
Ben Boyd.
Senator Gordon, of Georgia, after be
ing very ill, for some days, spoke in the
Senate Wednesday in advocacy of his-bill
to create a sinking fund for the liquida
tion of the Pacific railroad debt. After
leaving the Senate he had a severe chill,
and was compelled to go to bed, but his
physician' hopes to have him out in a
day or two: - - . •
St.. Joseph Mo., exults in the possession,
of a man of 80, who -for the past sewn
years has been compelled. 40 walk inces

years ago he resorted inordinately to the
use of calomel; pains set in subsequently,
at.last settling in his poor feet, and now
he must make a Wandering Jew, a West
on, a Sergeant Bates, of hiniself. His

average of ten hours a day for seven years,
he has accomplished a distance of 25,000
miles, equal to the circumference of the
globe.
