A Lehigh county lover languishes in
jail to answer for a

atory libel of and concerning the young
lady who rejected his attentions.
During the year. of 1876 Harrisburg
had less, loss_ by fire than any city Of its
alio in the United States: The • whole
amount was only $5,197. The fire de
partment of the town consists of seven
companies, five steam fire engine compa
nies, one.hose company and one hook and
ladder company.
At the close 6f the year ending Septem
ber, 30, 1876, there were in the. Stite
Hospital, at Danville, 184 men and 127
women, or a -total of $ll. The average
Weekly cost
.of each: patient was $4.71.
The present accomodation is for .350
males and, by crowding, 120 females;
total, 470.

pieces - of ordnance to the Susquehanna
Soldiers' Monument Association passed a
third - reading.
On Saturday night, as a party of four
persons in a. • sleigh were' crossing the
lower iron bridge, which spans French
creek
,at Franklip, Venango county a
portion '.of it fell a distance of about 15
feet, carrying ; the party with it: One
of the hOrses was instantly killed, while
the other one was uninjured, and - the
gentlemen and ladies: who were in the
sleigh escaped with only slight bruises.

On Saturday morning the dead body
of Charles Collins; chief engineer of the
Lake Shore and Michigan Southern rail
way, was found at his residence. It was

four hours. In onei hand was grasped a
revolver, while another pistol and a razoi•
were lying beside him on the bed. He
undoubtedly , committed suicide by shoot
ing, and' it is believed that anxiety on
the account 'of the *terrible -disaster at
Ashtabula affected hi 9 reason. The family ,
of Mr. Collins was absent at the time of.
his suicide.
