Shortly after his marriagJ to Miss Re- .

OFFICIAL PERJ-URY.
,THIC TABLES Tuitrum.—At the lusvelection
Jacob L. Steinmitz, Demoerat, - was elected to
the Legislature from Lancaster cOunty, defeat
ing —Johnson,Republican. The - latter con-,
tested the election on the ground that illegal
votes, on account of non-payment of the taxes,
-had been cast for •Steinialitz. The Case'come
on for a . hearing before commissioners appoint.
ed by the court . and • the tax collector, A. R.
'Warfel, was the first witness. 'The ballets for
Steinmitz were identified by their numbers, and
it was proven by the tax collector Warfel that
good nuMber. of -persons who cast thein , had
not paid State or county•tax within two years,
as tho law requires* This is Old first instance
in which we have seen the numbering of the
votes utilized. 'After , this part of the evidence
had !men concluded,Warfel was,prosa 7 aramined.
The story he told;• convicting himself of per
jury and the illegal issue of . tax receiPts is rich
ness itself. Briefly he testified, that on the 6th
of October, S. H. Levan, Treasurer of the Re
publican Committee. paid, hiin ssoo,a,nd from
that time up to and includirig election day, he
issued tax receipts, ante-dating them back to
October 6, to persons designated by the Repub
-Dean Committee. Here- are 'some point.S'Of the
testimo'ny, which we find reported in full in the
Lancaster lnklligocer :
.
Question-'- Did you ever date a receipt as ot
any other date than the date ot which it was
issued.. (Alter a long pause ; and paint pl silence)
—I did. Thomony was paid to me, and the
..
receipts furnished a terwart_s: ,
Q. What - was th largest sum of money you
ever received in that way and when and from,
whom ? A. Five hundred' dollars, October 6,
1876, from S. H. Levan,treasurer, of the-Repub::
lican county committee. ,
[The witties — nhen' testified to that names of
'Republican politicians of Lancaster who gave
the, names ot persons to whim; tax receipts
were issued.)
Q. Do I understand that between October 7,
1876, and November 7,1876,as these men woula
lurnish you lists of names you would issue tax
receipts according to those lists of names and
date them back to October 6th or 7th,-1876J
Yes sir I
Q. Did you ,issue any on • the day of the
election ? A. I did. -
Q. How many feceipts of.the nature did
you issue between October 7 and November 7,
1876, and in whOse - names were they issued Y--
1
A. That would be very difficult for me to an
ewer.' I have no notes with me. I have a memo
randton'et. them at, home.
• . J . • .
This was enough. - • The counsel for the Re-•
,
publican contestant abandOned the case. The
result of, the inquiry was-to - Increase the ma

a little how-tome-ye-so ; and a reluctant wit
ness definei "nothing" as what he knows about
a police court case in which he is subpoenaed.
King Lear says that "nothing" comes to binoth
ing ;" but that throws very 'little light on the
meaning of the word. A punster: will argue
that "nothing" is better than Heaven ; but
that is only a coinparative definition, and ar
gues either little for the celestial comforts l or an
impossibility to realize the glories of "noth
ing." There are several ways of doing "noth
ing," .however: Some people do "nothing"
right ; others do triothine wrong ; though, it
would seem thit if "nothing" is a good thing
to do, one had better do it right than wrong.—
None of theie logical deductions somehow get
at the real meaning of the. word. The only
way to realize an acurate `
conception of the
term is by corroborative testimony ; and when
900 persons conteid for the same definition,
then it is presumedly a correct one: "Noth

.a prison of
fense. This article is 'not the first instance on
record of a journalist making a living by hav
ing "nothing" to write about.
