the two compound words_ above- given, teachers
and scholars appear to differ. 1 - would be-in
favor of the obsolescence of both expressions
and of adopting instead the word "hands." WO
say, "bushels of grain, pecks of feed, quarts 4::1 1
oats, gallons of molasses; barrels of flour, (the
quantity may be deajt out in sacks,) pints of
milk, buckets of watir,!etc." Then why. not 1
lay "hands of berries, 14nds of candy, hands of
nuts, hands of raisins, 11inds of crackers, etc ?"
Also, "spoons of sugar, ispoons, of flour, spoots
of salt,4large spoons of m4k, small spoons of
medicine, arms of wood, thimbles of seed, dip
pers of - water, cups of tea, etc ?" The • princi
ple idea is the quantity, and not the measure
by which the quantity is determined.
You say, "John, please draw three buckets
full of water and put it into this tub." John
may reply : "There is but one bucket in the
weii, where shell I, find the other two ?"
you say "bucket-fulls"of water,the word "fulls"
is plainly stiperfluous„ the plural \, being easily
denoted by adding "s" to "bucket" liVe think
it would convey the idea of , q uantity as well

witnessed on historic shores: "Our steamer
landed on a beach which was the port of An
tioch, where the diiciples were first called
Cbpstians. There was no town at tilt water's
edge, no people, no wharf. The passengers and
the merchandise were put ashore in lighters,
which ran up into the sand. A troop, of cam
els, with.their drivers; lay on the beach, ready
t& transport the goods into the interior.—
Among the articles landed - were boxes marked
"Dr. J. C. Ayer Lowell, - Mass.,U. S. A.,"
showing that, they contained .medicines and
whence they came. These with other goods
were hoisted on the ; backs of camels, tor trans
portation to Antioch. Thu the skill of the
West sends back, its remedies to heal the mh
ladies of populations that inhabit those eastern
