Walter Sti.eridan alias Walter: Stewart,
alias Charles Ralston, is a 'native of New
Orleans, La. He was well educated, and
was'esteemed a. lad of great promise.—
His first appearance as a public charac
ter was lin 1860, in Missouri when he
turned up as it horse thief.' He was then'
about thirty 'years' of age. Soon after,
Sheridan and Joe Morgan were arrested.
for robbing a hotel in Chicago, 111. Sher
idan was \ sentenced to five years impris
onment at Alton penitentiary. He served
his, time out; and so conducted himself
as to be knoWn as one of the `smartest
sneak hank thiev'es. in the coutan and as
a fir St-class "confidence man." He was
concerned in the blatchford robbery
some pears ago. Before this, in 1868, he
was c)oucerped with Charles Hicks in. the
robbery of the First National Batik of
Springfield, 111., by which the bank lost
00,000. Sharidan was afterwards ar
rested. and taken- to Springfield for trial,
but eseaped,it is alleged,.through a "pack
ed jurY.' At the time he was arrests d
for robbery he had over $22,000 op
his. pelson. Sheridan was also a partner
in the sneak robbery of the Maryland
