• SPRING BONNE . TB.—Spring bonnets tr mmed
ready for wear have arrived, says a' New York
journal, and are a creamy whtte Mass of chip,
-ribbons, lace and flowers, all of the one shade'
that is already becoming 'monotonous. The
chips are very fine, and the_ preference for yel- ,
lon ish white is marked, for although colored

among the large importations of,;trimrtaed bon

glossy straw bonnets are very handsome, and
are hrought out in the besi shapeit. These are
not the coarse, rough-and-ready straws.fOrmer

corn tiirt, Yet with raised braids that give them
a stylish rough surface. The. new shapes art
close at the sides, project above the forehead,
are short behind, - and those most in favor with
the best milliners have square crowns ; yet
there are mans round crowns; and many poke
bonnets of more or less pronounced shapes ;
the latter are rejected by leading deilerkbut
young . ladies have found out that they are be- ,

. LXAP YEAR :Humoß.--Just at present - the
conventional *it evoked by the , fact that this
is leap year pertiades many of the papers. Years
ago some anonymous' miscreant. invented the•
table that in leap year unmarried ladies ask Un
married ten to marry them. This- invention
iic called a joke, and his shaineless menfilacq
llss ever since been O'eanlot*ly, echoed 4 by certaM
etii;i)rs. Paragraplis asserting that oung m4n

cuuntry ; that badges bearing . the inscription
"engaged" or "sworn to celibacy" are openly
nom by single men as a means of protection;
WI that countless youngladies have proposed
to and been accepted by rich widowers and
handsome young melt, crowd the columns of
otheraiie. respectable and intelligently . concluc
tetl newspapers. As every one knows, there : id
not the slightest foundatiOn• for any One
Of
these paragraphs, - . There is not. an unmarried
vellum living who fancies that leap year con
fers on her the privilege of unseating haself;, or
Who, in any circumstances, vironlld avaitherself
of such an alleged privilege. I. And yet, news
papas continue to print the conventional leap
year anecdotes and expect the public to accept
them as witticisms. People do not laugh ever
them, as they do over the comic police.reports ! ,
They'simply 'read then in silence, regarding
them as a proper and necessary ;feature of every
leap year, and abstain from either killing, the
editor or openly denouncing his jokes out of a
vague feeling that he is Only doing his duty to
society, and is as irresponsible in, the matter; as
is the calendar itself..'

THE NEW TOWN HALL AT AYEIL—This ele
gant structure is now 'complete. In beauty of
design it surpasses anything of its kind in the
State. Constructed of brick and, dark rctuble
it is as permanent as it is charming. The Eng- .
lish architeots have adorned it, in subdued col
ors, which please without tiring the eye. Dr.
J. C. Ayer built and gave it to the town in ac-,
knowledgment 'of the distinction they confer
ed upon him in' taking his name. Although it
is a generous gift, still the hearty good - wishes.
of a whole people are of greater value and the
generous donor has doubtless secured them.--
