ty on a small scale, one day last
week. It was not caused by the
barbarous treatment of Cubans,
or by the invasion of the island of
Cuba, but it was caused by an in-

man's farm all of which is written
about by tbe Lcwistowu Democrat
and Sentinel as follows. .lohn E.
Jordeu, of New Isincaster, is farm
ing without fences. Last week he
shut up three head of cattle and
live hogs for trespass, ana when1
the owner came for his stock he
was asked to pay S for damages,
ii i . . i ........... I
ifiin, nit: i.w iir-t , iiiitiitr.iu ciiitrui7i
to turn the cattle out without pay
ing, when Jorden struck him with
a club. This caused a free fight,
iu which Jordeu had his shoulder
dislocated and Dean was lieaten
about the head with a club by the
wife and kicked iu the fare by her
little son, while loth the combat
ants lay on the ground. The re
sult might have proved more seri
ous had not James Ciilliert inter
fered, who took away the club,
whereupon the wife took an ax
which was also taken out of her
bands. She then took up a stone
and threw it, and it is Iielieved by
those present that the stone struck
her husband on the shoulder.
TRIBUTE OF RESPECT.
After an illness of alsmt four
months, Miss Ida Otella (Juyer,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David
Ouyer, of East Salem, departed
this life on Wednesday at 1 o'clock
of April 20, 1S9S. Her disease
was indigestion and although she
suffered intense agony, she was
never "known to complain, but in
her even and calm disposition,
awaited to lie lie called home,
where sickness and sorrow, pain
and death are felt and feared no
more. She was a loving daughter
and sister, respected and loved by
all in the community in which she
lived. Miss (Juyer will be greatly
missci I and long remeinliered by
all w hom she came in contact with,
and we commend her life to her
many friends, on account of her
amiable disposition, generous sym
pathy, loving heart, and noble
character. She was a great lover
of music, had lieen the organist in
the U. 1. Church for many years,
even until her health liegan to fail,
and as the writer has known Miss
Guyer for many years, lieen in her
society quite frequently, I cannot
help but ask my self, why is it
that one so useful in her commu
nity, loved so much by all her as
sociates should lie taken away so
young. Then the comforting words
come to us : The Lord kuows liest
which ones to take and in the
coining years we'll read the mean
ing of our tears, and then Ah!
then we'll understand.
The funeral services were held
on Sunday at 10 o'clock, a. m., in
the U. B. Church, conducted by
Kev. Landis and Cramer. The
funeral was one of the largest ever
known in that yicinity, which
manifests the high esteem in which
she was held.
Ve tender our heartfelt sympa
thy to the bereaved father, mother,
sisters and brothers, in this their
hour of sorrow, hoping that the
God of all good w orks will grant
tbem support and pence. - be was
