Is the countries of the old world
rulers aad ofiisa holders are born rul
ers and offl?a holders, and they rule
and hold office all their life from fil

channels cf life there to make their

the ofueera were elected at rogalarly
stated times, and frequently men en
tirely unfit for the management of
their own affairs and consequently un
fit for tho management of everybody's
affairs are put into cfilce. The re

tho peoplo to vote for. They era all
competent men able to lake care of

A paper from Miuass na says:-
Cora will be ba barbed for fuel this
winttr in many sections of .Minnesota
and South Dakota. Uual n $ a ton
dearer than last year, aad with corn
at 11 cents a bushel it is iauth more
valuable as fuel than as food. It
makes an excellent fire, and an ear of
corn makes more heat than its bulk
in wood. Ia North Dakota coal is so
high that the mining of lignite baa
been greatly stimulated. IMS caai
is abundant and easily mined, it is
rich in carbon, but has a great amount
of ash and moisture. For fuel it is
worth two-thirds its balk in aathra

"The Nation's Hired Man.'
Candidate Eryan'e favorite way of
alluding to the President of
of the United States as the nation s
'hired man" is quite in keep.
ing with his constant lack cf dignity
in all the relations of life. The tsrm,
however, suggests some vary good
reasons why Mr. Bryan should not be
"the nation a hired man. If wo Lur
ed a man to ran a vast enterprise
and he rau the business cn snch pun
cipics that Le showed a loss instead
cf a said: a deficit instead or a sur
plus; increase in our iadebtedaessia
stead of a lessening of it, wo would
soon turn him out and put in a ''hir
ed man" who would run the business
on different principles. The Govern
naent has been run, daring this ad
ministration in accordance with the
Free-Trade principles advocated and
voted for by Ur. Bryan, and put into
force by his help. The result has
been an increase in our bonded in
dtbtedness of over S2bl2,OOU,0(JU in
three years. When the nation's bus
iness was conducted on the princi
pies laid down by Major McKinley,
the national indebtedness was reduc
ed at the rate of over $60,000,000 per
year, for 27 consecutive years. When
it comes to choosing a "hired mac,"
the voters will choose the man whose
methods enable the nation to pay its
old debts and meet its running ex
penses instead of the man whose
methods compel the nation to add to
its indebtedness. The next Presi
dnt will not be the Boy Orator of
the Platte with bis British system of
Free-Trade, but William McKLnley of
Ohio, the apostle of the American
system cf Protection, who will open
the mills instead of monkeying with
the mints. American Eoonomist.
Tanning Sheep Skins-
To prepare sheep skins for mats,
make a strong soap lather with hot
water and let it stand until celd;
wash the fresh skin in it, carefully
equsc-zing out all the dirt from the
wool; wash it in cold water until all of
the soap is taken out. Dissolve a
pound each of salt and alum in two
gallons of hot water, end put the ekia
into a tnb sufficient to cover it; let it
soak for twelve hours, and hang it ov
er a pole to drain. When well drain
e ', slrutch it carefully on a board to
dry, and stretch several times when
drying. Before it is quite dry,
spriukie cn tbe hesli sido one ounce
of pulverized alum add saltpetre, rub
bicg them in well. Try if tho wool
be firm on the skin; if not let it re
main a day or two, then rub it again
with alum. Fold the flesh sides to
gather and hang in tbe shado for
two or three days till quite dry.
Scrape the flesh side with a ' blunt
knife and rub with a pumice stone.

sues cf the campaign. A-Hreasts
were mad by Dr. W. H. Rsders
and Wm. Il" Groninger of Mifflin
Io wd, who very plainly anl forcibly
explained the money question and en
lightened tho citizens on this eubjaot.
Of course Dr. RoJgera iasistcd oa
ho election of th$ whole republican
ticket and whan Jtichael R. Bea
shor's aad H. H. Hartman's r.aicts
were moutioned, these two candidates
being present, much cheering was
done, showing that these candidates
wire appreciated by t'ja pwple, aad
tl.&i they intead togivo them a big
majority on tho 3rd of next Noveia
bar. The majority of the peoplo in
t'iis township wiil express themaelves
ia this manner, if not rordj ia senti
ment: We want not sliver coinage free
To drzg us down ii poverty.
Our money now ia good enough,
Had we but plenty of that "stuff."

Tn Southern Confederacy was or
gauized under the doe'rioesof states'
rights, the same doctrine that Ifr.
Bryan is in favor of. - When jootoU
for Bryan yoa vote to raise what the
government fought to put down.
Every vote yoa cast for Bryan is a
vote in the direction of ccsfusing the
county finances of Juniata, for when
the Bryan panio takes place in the
event of his election there will be
greater or less confusion where there
is n debt, aad Juniata having a large
debt on account of her free bridges
across the river, she will be in a great
state of confnsien between this and
next April. So for yonr own securi
ty and well being financially vote the
republican ticket. Vote for the re
publican county commissioners.
