HOW AN AX IS MADE.

On enterin't the main workshop tho

is the form.it ion of the as head without
tho blade. The glowing Hat iron bars
ore withdrawn from the furnace and are
taken to a powerful and somewhat com
plicated machine, which performs upon
them four distinct operations, shaping j
the metal to form the upper and lower I
piut of the ax, then the eye, and finally
doubling the piece-over so tiiat the whole-
can be welded together. Next tho iron
is put iu a powerful natural gas furnace
and .Tted to a white hat. Taken out,
it ;'oes under a. tilt hammer and is weld
ed in a second. This done, one blow
from the "drop," and the poll of the ax
ia completed and Cnuly welded. Two
crews of men are doing this class of
work, and each crew can make 1,500 axes
per day.

operator ha a glass in front of him to
j protect his eyes from the ppark.i which
fly by the hundreds an the hot metal
is pressed against the rapidly revolving
saw. Tiie iron part of the ax is now
complete. The st-- 1 for the blade, after
being heated, is cut by machinery and
shaped. It is then ready for the v.vldiug

edge of the iron, the teel of the blade
