Welch, was killed, and her intended
husband. Mr. MeCI.-i ichen to whom
she was to be married on ihe coming
Thursday, April 2o. wan fataiy in
jured by a freight engine running
into the caboose in which they were
t akin. 7 a pleas ire trip from Huges
vilic, Lyo -niing county, to Williams
port, cu West Branch of tho Snsoue-har-n
i. The caboose was attached to
a fast freight and was followed by a
locomotive t hat was to bring the
i cabooEC nnil pleasure seekers back to
Iluflbisvilie from Williaiusport. At
Peundedo station 12 miles from Wiil
iauisport, the freight stopped, aud
the following locomotive crushed the
cabo ose-. Mrs. Baily was seriously
injured, others in the caboose f scap
ed. Miss Welch the intended bride
was a school mate cf Miss Drum,
daughter of Rev. Mr. Drum, of this
town, and a school mate of Miss
Bess Pennell, daughter of Merchant
Joseph Pennell of this town. Mips
Pennell was to bo ono of Miss
Welches brides maids and was ready
on Saturday to take tho train to go
to Hugesviile when she received a
despatch announcing the death of
her friend in tha collision of the lo
comotive with the freight train. Miss
Welsh was the enly child of B. F.
Welsh superintendent of the Iiughcs
viilo branch railroad.

Thieves at Work.
Lsst Thorsday night, thieves en
tered Judge Barton's store at Spruce
Hill, by way of tha transom over the
back door Burk Kceely, the store clerk
who lodges in tho Judge's house,
heard the glass of the broken tr.insom,
jingle, quickly aroso and with Mr.
Barton's son, and others hastened
out." When they came out of
the house, a thief in a shed near the
store fired a pistol hot. B irtdn di?i
charged his gun The thi :ves got
away without even being seen. If
they had been discovered a faw
moments earlier they would hava
been canght in the store room. They
had barely tirua to get insido over
the transom and open the door and
get ont. A sledge, tongs and brace
and bit were found on the premises,
and when identified belong to Oscar
Wolf who has a black smith shop in
Ihe valley about 2 railes from the
store. The thieves it is believed
came dowu the valley to this placa
and on their way down they stopped
at Acadeniia and stole Rev. Daven
port's horse and cart and lried to rob
the store at Johustown and drove to
within a mile nud a half of the town
and left the horse and cart near Murry
Cunningham's plac9 where it was
found on Friday morning. From
the nppearauce of the cart, tho men
were heavy men or there were thre
thieves.
