The Thrifty Japanese.
What is the rcuson that Japan has no

bly to In? funnel iu the land system,
which has given to every worker a hold
ing ;i-k1 eiicunra.Lteil him to Mipply his
waul i by Ids wn lnbor. There id, too,
iu Jatian a curious absence of ostenta
tions luxury.
The hliit.s if living are in all classes
much tint Kiiine, .mil the rich lo nut out

jewelry. Tin; rich ieiul tln ir l.ioncy on
curios, which, if these arc costly, is limit
ed, and the most popular agitation is
ayuinf t the bi Europi an houses which
ministers Intilil for themselves. Wealth is
thus not ubsorlied ami is more ready for
investment in remunerative labor. The
la-st reasou which occurs to the mind of a
traveler with comparatively few oppor
tunities for forming opinions is the
equality of manners iu all classes. Rich
anil poor are alike courteous. It is not
possible to distinguish euipk3'er from
laborer by their behavior. All are clean:
all are easy; all are restrained.
The governor lets his child go to tbe
common school and sit next to the child
of the casual laborer, certain that his
child will pick up no bad manners and
get no contamination in thought or in
person. This equality enables rich and
poor to meet as friends, and gifts can
pass without degradation. The rich no
bles iu the country, just as the universi

thus able to give to those whom they
know to be in need, and friendship be

of the industrial system? It is possible
that some of it may and that Japan may
teach the west how to deal with the poor.
