Association of Philadelphia desires to
secure entertainment for some chil
dren from July 2S to Aug 12. They
range in age from 4 to 14yeirs. The
children do not come from the slums,
but are of the poor working class,
who live in cramped, uncomfortable
homes, many of whom have never
seen a green field. The Asseieiation
pay all travelling expenses. Persons
willing to entertain one or more cm

Bloomfie'd, Perry county people
are talking of supplying their town
from a spring a mile west of town,
located 75 feet higher than the bor
ough. The wafer from Macedonia that
supplies Mifflintown, comes from the
mountain 4i miles and has a fall of
230 feet to the top of the piers of the
river bridge and the pressure is 99
pounds to the inch.
Travel on the Tuscarora Valley
Railroad was heavy on the 4tb. The
cars running both ways were crowd
ed. The seats not only were filled,
but the aisles and platform wero
crowded by people standing.
Second Lieutenant Amos Martin,
who recently graduated from the
United States Military School at
Wf st Point, has been assigned to
dnfy in Company L First Regiment,
United States Infantry, now station
ed in California.
Mr. Edward Schue of New Sher
man's Church, bouerht twenty head
of cattle last fall at $2.50. They
weighed 1G.000 pounds and cost
S410. He sold them last week at $5
per hundred. They weighed 22,210
pounds and amounted to $1,110.50.

Bioomfield Times: It is stated that
the salary of the post master atDua

Joseph Swartz, supervisor of
Newton township, a prominent and
influential farmer, residing near New
vi'.le, committed oiucide on the 22nd
ins., by hanging. He was 45 years
old. No cause is assigned f;T the
act. Last Wednesday evening,
Thomas Harpe.r citizen of Howe
township, dieel suddenly at the canal
lock house, about threo miles east of
Newport. He had been out on the
river with Jacob Sheaffer fis'iing dar
ing the day and had just returned to
the house when he was stricken while
fritting on a chair, and died iu the
arms of Mr. Sheaffer. The deceased
was a veteran of the lata civil war
and whs a persioner.
On Sunday morning Mrs. Albert
Hackenbergcr espied two tiainps en
ter the yard at East Point. Busi
ness had kept her husband out late
on Saturday night aud she said to
herself "there was a rain last night,
and my husband I suppose placed
his wet shoes on the porch. I'll go
down and see." She looked on the
porch. Tho shoes were not there.
She called Hackenberger and asked
about his feot gear. '"Yes," said he,
'I left the ' shoes on the porch."
"The're gone," said Mrs , "and I ktow
a tramp bus them." That was enough
for officer Hackenberger. He hur
ried out and down bj the foundry,
and was almost past that place when
he turned his head and looked in by
the alley that lead's by Tobias Anker's
tombstone factory. There sat a
stranger. Hackenberger went to
him. The tramp was just in the act
of putting on the stolen shoes. The
officer took the thief bv the collar,
and marched him into the presence
of Squire C. B. Horning who sent
him tj jail.
