SENTINEL & REPUBLICAN MiyFLINTOWN. WEDNESDAY. FEBRTJA RI 1, 1 898. B. F. SCHWEIER BDITOB ABB rBOrBIBTOB. Therc is blood in the eye of the Frenchmen, because EuglaDtl pre vented tbe Khedive of Eypt from selecting his own Cabinet officers. England wanted to play the big boFs with Egypt, and Frauce says it shall not be done. The trouble in Hawaii seems to be between the foreign and native e!e merit. The Queen proposed to adopt a new constitution to disfranchise all foreigner?, and put the whole gov- ernment in the bands of native poli ticians. Tbe foreign element was to strong, and broke up the govern ment and dethroned the Queen. Governor Pattisox and State prin ter, B. F. Meyers, both Democrats, are having a lively time over the S'jite printing. Meyers has ben eaying ugly things about the Gover nor, and the Governor has been im puting questional business methods against the State printer, and has raised such attention that an investi gation is to take place. The people cf the world are no better to day than they were 1800 years ago. Two Presidents have been assassinated within the past thirty years, and organized labor here in Pennsylvania, employed the assassin to kill the head of a firm that em ployed them at Homestead, and alsj employed the poisoner to poison the food of laborers who do not belong to their union organizations. The Hawaiian Islands have a rev olution on bands. The bulk of the trade of the Islands is with this coun try, and the traders or commercial men express a desire to be annexed to the United States. Annex them. Annexation must become the policy of this government in its relation to other countries, just as it was the policv of the Roman crovernment 2,000 years ago. Southern fire eaters are re-writing up, B. F. Butler, recently deceased. They all consign him to the region of everlasting torment for the way he treated the Southern cause and its impudent people, in his depart ment, during rebellion. Some other people believe Butler is now a saint. Ones belief on the question of slavery and freedom has a good deal to do with their belief as to whether he is in Abraham s bosom or in the hot place, begging for a drop of water to cool his parched tongue. JAMES G. BLAINE. Hox. James Gillespie Blaine died at 11 o'clock on Friday - morning, January 27, 1893. He was born in Brownsville, Fa., January 31, 1830, and after his school days at Wash ington College he went to Kentucky, and there taught school. While in that State he married Miss Harriet Stamwood, of Maine, who was then a school girl in Kentucky. He re turned to Pennsylvania, and studied law, but the clients were few and the fees small and he was compelled to seek a livelihood in some other occu pation. He became a teacher in the Pennsylvania Institute for the In struction of the Blind in Philadel phia, and taught there two years. In 1855 he moved to Maine and assum ed editorial charge of the Kennebec Journal. In 1858 he was elected to the Legislature of Maine, In 1862 ne was elected to Congress. Rebell ion was then at its flood tide. Blaine's ability as a pnblic speaker and his intensely patriotic expressions made him prominent before the whole country, and from that time np to the hour of his death public atten tion was constantly centered upon him. He excelled in the ability to express himself clearly and attract ively on every subject that he gave closo attention to, and his utterances were so close to the heart and mind of the people of the Northern states that he was the chief public speaker among the champions of popular government, reciprocity, and protec tion to American industry. His fun- tL- -o r 3 I meut at Washington. If gold in sufficient quantity exist d in the world to float the bonded indebtedness the single gold stand ard would be all right, but as there are only about three thousand mill ion gold in existence the folly of at tempting to much longer carry the indebtedness on such slim basis is clearly to bo Been. A break must take place somewhere. Tbe re in statament of silver to its true posi tion as money by giving it the rights of free coinage will - save tbe world from a great financial crash and stop the downward tendency of the price of a good deal of property. . Silver will again come to the front when the crash takes place, but it amounts almost to a crime to allow the gold experimenters and speculators to drive the civiizad world to such extremities. What Hawaii Is. The kingdom of Hawaii consists of fifteen islands in the North Pacific, only eight of which are inhabited. They are about 2,100 miles from San Francisco. The population is abont 80,000, and the total area ia 6,640 square miles. Of the popula tion in 1890, 34,436 werA natives, 15,301 Chinese, 12,360 Japanese, 8,602 Portuguette, 1,928 Americans, and 1,344 British. Nine-tenths of the trade of the islands is with the United States. Tbe exports consist mainly of sugar, ric?, bananas and hides. Honolulu, the capital, on the is land of Oahu, is lighted by electrici ty, and nearly every leading family in the town has its telephone. In 1890, 295 vessels visited the islands. Tbe naval and military forces of the islands consist of the household guards, fixed at sixty -five men. There are no volunteer military organiza tions. David Kalakaua, tho seventh and probably the last king of the Hawa iians, was born in Honolulu on No vember 16, 1836. He was educated in the royal school at Honolulu. He married the chieftainess Kipiolana in 1803, and after the death of Prince Lnnalilo, on February 3, 1874, he announced himself as a candidate for the tkrone, Prince Lnnalilo i i UaVinSf failed to proclaim a successor. Em ma, the widow of Kamehameha IV., tbe queen dowager, was also a can didate. Kalakaut was elected by an extra session of tbe Legislature. Queen Emma's partisans attacked the legislature, but wero dispersed by marines from the American and British warships in the harbor, and the king was installed. Queen Lili uokalani is the eldest Bister of King Kalakaua, who died on January 20, 1891, in San Francisco. She suc ceeded to the throne. Her husband John O. Dominis, long resided in Hawaii. Mr. Domin's accompanied Queen Kapiolani, Kalakau's consort, and the dethroned Queen Liliuokal ani to this couatrv in 1887. GENERAL NEWS ITEMS. There is a wide difference between horse talk and horse sense. No sham is more easily detecte d thr.n paint on tbe uce. In a few weeks we'll be locking for what the ground hog is to prophesy. There are few people who do much reading or writing who do not wear glasses. A San Francisco paper says that California is suffering from a "girl famine." The 22nd of February, Washing ton's birthday, this yeir comes on Wednesday. He was a smart man who said, it isn't your sin that finds you out It is your neighbor. It is strange how manyffaults a fellow finds in a girl after she has refused to marry him. The early spring vegetable crop is going to p'ay the peach crop game this vear, so rumour has it.
