Two feet of snow fell in Norfolk and other parts of "Virginia last week, the deepest snow in that part of the country since 1856. A man employed a boy and said after the bargain was made, "now my son you'll have a chance to rise at 3 o'clock in the morniDg." In the sweet by and by the rail road will be lit at night with elec tricity, and head lights on locomo tive will no longer be required. The ice plant at the railroad i3 still running, nature is such a fickle dame that the railroad can no longer rely on her for a full ice supply. Frank Hawk fell on the ice a few days ago and badly bruised his left arm. Dr. W. H. Banks rendered the necessary surgical attention. An exchanere remarks that ideal happiness is found in going home, sitting down lighting a pipe, smok ing, and thinking about nothing. " The letters remaining uncalled for in the Mifflintown post office, on the last day of the old year were for Miss Annie Martin, Mr. Aaron An drews. Some one who has beeu to Milroy, Mifflin county, says the wild and badpeople of the place have all been converted and the town is very re spectable now. The residence of the snperinten dent cf the Speer White Eand works at Mapleton was destroyed by fire last Sabbath moraine: during the absence of the family. John J. Patterson, Jr., purchased from William Rollman for $1,000 lot on Main street opposite the Jacobs House. In the spring Mr. Patterson will erect a two story brick office building, which will be quite an improvement to that part of Main street. The Cleveland Administration will have a hundred thousand appoint ments to fill, which insures a full half million disappointed office seek ers by this time next year. The rabbit has escaped from the sportsmens' chase by the kindness of the law only to be driven to star vation by the coat of sleet that cov ers its for a going ground. Congr3g3naan Antony, of Texas, has a bill in congress that proposes to repealing the act of June 27, 1800, grouting pensions to soldiers. The bill also provides that ad pensions granted under the act shall be dis continued. An interesting event in history of the First Baptist Chnrch, of Wil liamsburg, N. 1., on the last night of the old year, was the payment of a $25,000 mortgage and the core mony of burning tho mortgage in an urn on the pulpit. Harry Patterson, a student of Vet erinary ourgery ; Marry Uopeland, a Pharmacy 6tudent, and Edward Ber ry, a Medical student, all of the Uni versity of Pennsylvania, spent the holiday vacation at their respective homes in this place. Evil to him who evil thmketh. Charles Felt a lailroad brakeman while coupling cars at Port Roval last Friday evening, got his left foot under the wheels of the car. The foot was crushed. Drs. Crawford & Son, amputated the foot. Mr. Felt was sent to the hospital in Altoona, where at last accounts he was doing as well as could be expected. The dwelling LV5uee of David Adams, near Johnstown, this county, took fire in the roof about nooD, last Friday, Mrs. Adams was the only one at home at the time. A fire that started in the cellar of the Coleman House, in Lewistown, destroyed that house between the hours of 3 and 4 o'clock on the morning of the 27th ult., insurance six thousand dollars. Oa Christmas day, all the children and grand children, of Hon. James North and wife, met in re union at the home residence on Main street. Dr. Charles Martin, a physician of Sunbary died on Monday evening, December 26, last. He was a son of Rev. Jacob Martin, a former pastor of the Lutheran congregation in this borough. There are few people liv ing in Mifflintown that were here when Mr. Martin preached in the place and fewer still whtf remember his son Charles, then a boy. A Ilappy New Year. The largo audience that attended the Concert given in tho Westmins ter Presbyterian chnrch last Thurs day evening, for the benefit of the Presbyterian Sabbath School piano fund, were treated to one of the most delightful musical entertain ments ever given hero. The fact that the home talent acquitted itself in such elegant style, was a great pleas ure to the people of this town who were present. That we Lave among us musicians and voices, that rank well and would be considered good anywhere, del:ghted the audience, and the entertainers were repeatedly encored.
