Potatoes.
E.lmuu.1 Hersej's experience leads
bim to the following conclusions
uoia potatoes wm produce a crop
from a week to ten tlavs earlier than
cat potatoes. Small whole potatoes
will produce for many years in suc
cession just aa good, if not better re
sults, than larger potatoes cat the
size of the small whole ones. The
seed end of a potato is better to
plant than the stem end. because tbe
plants start with more vitror, and
produce larger and more potatoes.
A large piece of potato is better to
plant in ordinary soils, and will pro
tiuce a muen oetter crop tlian very
small pieces or single eyes, rota
toes with t-prouts long enough to
break off in planting are not as good
as potatoes with the eves started
just enough to show their good
condition. The form of a potato
cannot, as a lule, be changed by the
selection for planting any particular
form. Two distinct varieties will no
mix by planting in the same hill.
The potato scab is a blemish that
tbe more we investigate the less we
appear to know abont it.
Foreign Potatoes.
There is a dutv of 15cts a bushel
on potatoes brought into the United
States ; even at that price dealers
find it profitable to bring them from
across the sea as ballast Possibly
in tbe near future the American farmer
may demand a high tariff on potatoes.
iiie following article is of general
interest on tbe question of. foreign
potatoes and is from a conversation
that a reporter had with G. S.
Palmer, of No. 1G6 Reade street New
lort. haM ir. t. 1'almer. It is
I astonishing "on what an extensive
scale foreigu-trrown potatoes have
been brousrbt into this country re
ceutly. We have been receiving po
tatoes from New Brunswick, Nova
Scotia, Prince Edward's island and
the Canadian provinces for a long
time, and have become accustomed
to that fact. It made no material
difference in the market price, for
transpot tation facilities were not so
couveuient between Canadian ports
and ours. But with these European
importations it's altogether different
Witn big steamers coming into port
every day frotu Europe, the ocean is
little more than a ferry route. They
have gt to bring something for bal
last, and even at the smallest profit
it is better to carry potatoes than
stones or sanl. I have calculated
that on every bushel of European po
tatoes landed here there is a net prof
it of twenty five cents. They pay the
tariff of nfteen cents a bushel, and
still find it profitable to send their
potatoes here.
Quite a perceptible eartbqutke
shock was feit in Memphis at 3 50
o'clock Siturday morning. People
asleep in the upper stories of tbe
buildings and residences were con
siderably aUrme l. Its duration was
only a few Beconds.
