U. Beach assaulting his wife with surgical instru ments. He drove a surgeon's knife in to her throat, and then finished his mur derous assault by cutting ber bead off with a cleaver. He then walked to tbe house of Levi Knott, who is bis wife's brother, and told bim what be did, and requested bis brother-in-law to have bim arrested. He was arrested and will be given a trial for the murder. An exchange states that tbe post-of-fioe department is about to begin tbs examination and review of tbe claims of postmaster for a readjustment of their salaries for the period between tbe year 1804 and 1874, in accordance with tbe provisions of tbe act of March 3, 1883. Circular letters are being sent to all persons who were postmasters during that period, or their heirs, call ing for information concerning their claims, but it is stated at the depart uient that further progress in the case is not possible unless Congress makes provisiou for at least twenty additional clerks. There are many thousands of these claims, covering periods of from oe to ten years, and postal officials say that tbe sum of fitly million dollars may be required to pay them.
