A love story: Miss Rosalie Rose
leaf, who is beautiful and sentimental,
was sitting one summer evening with
Hollis Holwortby on the veranda. The
moon was shiuing brilliantly. Silence
had reigned for some moments, when
Rosalie, who, as tbe books say, was
not a thousand miles away from Hollis'
purple cravat, looked up suddenly in
bis faco and sighed, "I must go iu at
ten ; is it ten yet " "No, dear," said
he, looking at his watch, "it is only ten
minutes of ten." A soft restful ex
pression spread over Rosalie's faoe at
inese worm, ana she said, "Then we
may stay here ten minutes more ; ten
precious minutes here together in the
beautiful moqnlight," and her head a- !
gain returned to a point not a thou
sand miles distant from Hollis' purple
cravat. Then noor Hollis. inst as if
tbe whole affair was a purely business
transaction, blurted out, "But my
watch is ten minutes slow.'' Poor.
prosaie Hollis lost by a slip of tbe
tongue tbe sweetest girl this side of
Cambridge. Harvard Lampoon.
As the news comes in from abroad
the faot is revealed that the grand sun
sets that stsrtled the people of this
mountain valley some weeks ago was
not confined to particular localities.
Writing on the subject, the Pbiladel
phia Times, of the 13th says: The
Roman correspondent of the London
Times telegraphed that on Thursday
evening, November 29th, tbe same ev
ening on which the brilliant sunset af
terglow was first notioed here, the pop
nlation of Rome had been struck with
admiration, mingled with awe, at tbe
sight of a similar phenomenon. For
fifteen minutes after sunset, be says,
until more than an hour later tbejorth-
westera hemisphere was tinged with
crimson, gradually increasing in inten
sity until it had tbe appearanoe of the
reflection of an extensive conflagration,
in front of which the tower of tbe cas
tar's and tbe outlioe of Monte Mario,
as seen from the finoio, stood out is
promineot relief. Immediately above
tbe horison there was a broad belt of
orenee red and above that another of
green, surmounted by the erimson glare
of the auiora. Tbe sky of tbe eastern
hemisphere presented a uniform sea-
green tint. The phenomenon was re
peated tbe following morning and ev
ening, as it was here, showing tbat tbe
causes of this beautiful display must
equally have affected a large part of
tbe globe.
Tbe Washington Agricultural De
partment on the 11th inst, sent out the
following crop report. Tbe season for
cotton picking sinoe tbe oocdrfenee of
frost, as in the gatheriog of the eotton
crop, has been quite favorable. Tbe
local estimates of aggregate produot
bave not been diminished, and tbe tone
of general comment baa been compara
tively hopeful. The indioations of tbe
December returns favor a teduotion of
about 13 per oeot. from the crop of
last year.
Tbe returns of corn production are
more conservative than those of Octo
ber and November, from tbe injury to
soft corn by warm, moist weather.
North of tbe fortieth parallel the corn
tbat has been cribbed is in worse con
dition than for many years. The pro
portion of unmerchantable corn is there
fore large. The Coat estimato of quan
tity produced will fall a fow millions
abort of tbe indications of previous re
turns, or twenty-three bushels per acre.
This estimate relates only to quantity,
and makes no discount for inferior
quality, which seriously increases the
practical shortage. The losses from
packing in masses, or injury of soft
corn from mild and wet weather, are
treated as after harvest considerations.
An investigation will be made of tbe
extent of such injury.
The wheat aggregate slightly exceeds
400,000,000 bushels. Tbe oats crop
is about 4 per cent. larger than tbat of
last year, and exceeds 500,000,000
bushels.
Tbe yield of rye and barley is a lit
tie less than in 1882, and buckwheat
is reduced more than one-thirds
Tbe Huntingdon Journal says:
Considerable oomment has bteen occa
sioned throughout tbe valley by the
report of tbe sudden and ridiealous
ending of a wedding party at Three
Springs on Thanksgiving evening. The
faote are as follows: For some time a
young man named , a telegraph
operator in tbe west, has been paying
bis addresses to Miss , daugter of
Mr. , a farmer living near Three
Springs, being an only daughter,
aooompliabed and refined. The young
man's widowed mother made her home
at Three Springs. So on Thanksgiving
day ,oame in from tbe West,
stating to several of bis acquaintanees
at this plaoe tbat be was to be married
on tbat evening. Tbe marriage was. to
have been solemnised at one of tbe
cburobes. A large congregation bad
assembled, as alio the beautiful young
bride, accompanied briber father.
Tbe hour for tbe wedding came and
went, but no groom made bis appear
ance It soon became pain fully evi
dent tbat something was wrong. After
waitiDg a sufficient time tbe congregation
dispersed in a wondering state of mind.
Tbe next day the young lady received
a note from tbe jouog man , ttet-
iog tbat be bad gone baok to his Wes
tern home ; that he " did not love ber
sufficient to marry ber." The matter
baa created considerable comment and
tbe f fiends of the young lady intend
giviog the young scamp some trouble;
not that they care to recover money
from bim, for tbey are rich in this
world's goods, but to punish bim for
tbe ignominious meaner in which be
J has treated tbe young lady. He will :
lose bis sitn-tiow in the west and be
given to learn that marriage vows are
are not to be treated so lightly. Tbe
matter has created considerable . sym
pathy for the yound lady and contempt
for the young man.

Aunt Maria, in deliverioc ber whole

spoiled as is his appearance, he is still rec

Tbat the introduction of two horns io the
Lutheran church has disgusted a number of
the older members. To their minds tbe
blast of a horn in the church ia as the puff
oi tne areata or old Satan, and tbe sweep
of tbe fiddle's bow as a whisk of the tail of
the Devil. Aunt Maria remembers when
the organ was first pat in ase there. A
Presbyterian elder then said, "the Luther
ana should buy a monkey for tbeir organ.'
Tbe same elder lived to hear the notes of
the organ in sacred song in hia church.
Tbe older people were educated against tbe
use of tbe fiddle and born in tbe cbnrcb,
and it is like you "mast be born agnia" fo r
them to receive a new education in church
music that they were taught to despi:
when they were children. The children
that hear the music now will be educated
to the notes of the fiddle and horn and ne
more expect to see old Satan appear among
them, than did their fathers and mothers
when they aang the good old bymna of the
past in tb. good old fashioned way when
they were young.
That tbe coarse of stody in tbe common
schools should be confined to spelling,
reading, writing, arithmetic, geography and
grammar. If the State will teach those
branches thoroughly it la all that the State
should do.
That the agent who gave a set of new
school books to the directors of a certain
township when they pot out the old books
and took what he was selling, was to beat
Copeland, on snobbery, and had a lady with
him. How many dollars were taken need
lessly robbed from the people by bis trans.
action jn hooka. Uniformity in school
books and ten years time without change of
books, would stop the work ot the briber,
and tbe bribed director for a period of 10
years. Copeland missed such snobs.
That Copeland. in his delivery about
snobbery, missed corporations, communis ta
and spoilsmen. Jakie, dear, he missed yon.
That Uncle Jake had better adviae bis

That a number of the lady teachers at tbe

men admire most.
That Uncle Jake is a conceited old bach
elor flirt to declare that the handsomest
teacher smiled oa him. It wasn't me, dear
Jakie. What a pole-cat yon are.
That it ia not a natural sin to drink or
smoke, Jakie, the sin consists in the abuse;
to drink or smoke to excess, to loss of
health, or to debauchery, or waste of means
tbat should go to tbe support of tbe family
is where the wrong comes in. Pnt that in
your pipe, Jakie, aud smoke it.

That ibe narrows railroaders tbat are
driviug tbe stakes for the new road, are not
asking for funds of people along tbe line of

That Uncle Jake is impudent to ask Aunt

you, bow often, before I do that, you must
become a mackerel eater, ladies ill like
mackerel, you know, and if tbey don't eat
tbem in public tbey eat tbem secretly ) yon
most cultivate a stronger belief in tbe boofis
of Moses, and have more faith in tbe teach
ing of tbe 12 fishermen, and fish eaters that
followed the Master. Don't you think,
Jakie, that yon are playing the fraud when
you talk against masters and bosses and

dear Jakie, spurn the old and new Testa

quit talking about masters and bosses, rec

your boss's name on it, then you will be
