Lice are the great pest of the
poultry-house. Hens left to range
about the farm or garden will keep
clean by wallow ing in the dust
But for a good part of the year the
villagers have to keen their hens in
confinement, and very soon, without
constant watchfulness, lice appear:
and if the iionl try-house is near the
barn.or within it, the vermin spread
to the cow and horse s'ables and
make trouble there. Whitewash
ing if it were attended to every
month, would be effectual, if tho
wash penetrated all the cracks. But
this involves a great deal of lalior,
and it is difficult to reach all tlie
crevices. There is the same object
ion to sulphur and tobacco-smoke. A
few of the lice are generally left
for seed after every smoking. The
best remedy we have ever applied is
erude petroleum, or, if more conven
ient, the common kerosene oil u-ted
for lamps. This is always at hand,
and a few minutes' labor with the oil
can will rout the enemy. Generally
one application is enough to dostroy
them. We apply it directly to the
perehes, pouring a continuous stream
from tho spout. Tho lions get this
oil upon their feet and legs, and it
is dabU'd nil over the feathers. It
is penurntiug, and the odor seems to
bo exceiKlmgly ollensivo to all in

broken to nieoes, but Mr. Bar nh art
etoaped with aiight injnriea.
The Time?, observes. We witnessed
a touching-scene the other day. A
full-crown, healthy looking married
man going towards the suburbs with a
base ball bat over bis shoulder, and a
few minutes thereafter, while passing
bis house, we noticed bis wife sawing
wood in the back yard.
Several cows belonging to Harry
Swartz, of Tuscarora twp., broke out
ef pasture and wandered on the rail
road track, and were so muoh frighten
ed by a train of ears that a young cow
jumped from an embankment and broke
her leg. Some workmen ruled the
animal to end her misery.
John Thompson of Miller twp., was
badly cut in the hip by an ax in the
hands of a fellow workman, while en
gaged in peeling bark on Wednesday
a week. The catching ot the az in a
limb of a tree caused the aeoident to
the limb of Thompson. It will keep
him from work for a week or two.
A scamp has been through the
eounty selling carpet at 10 cts per
yard, by sample, and taking orders
from the farmers, requiring each farm
er to giro one dollar cash when the or
der is given. Of eourse the whole
transaction was a fraud gotten up to
make dollars. Everybody should
have a county paper read np and not
fall a victim to every sharper that
comes along and asks for money.
The Advocate says on last Friday
noon, Harry, a 12 year old son of Mr.
Josia Sloop, of Rye twp., met with an
aeoident tbat caused his death in a
shocking manner. Be rode one of his
father's mules to water, and had tied
the long hitching strap around bis
waist On the way back to the tarn,
the mule threw the boy to the ground,
and being fastened to the bridle by the
hitching strap around bis body, the
boy was trampled upon by the mule
and dragged about 200 yards before
the animal was stopped. When pick
ed up life was extinot There was 1
mark of the mule's hoof above the
right eye, and the body was badly
bruised.
