field. A meeting of condolence and syuiathy
In behalf of our fallen Chief waa bold at
Elchdeld on the evcuing of tbe SOtb nit.,
under the auspices of the Literary Society
of that place, in tbe United Brethren church.
Tbe building was appropriately draped In
mourning for tba occasion. The people,
Irrespective of party, assembled at an early
boiir, when the lullowing programme aet in t
lluaic by the choir, Miss Laura Smith, a
good musician bl liainbridgo, presiding at
the organ, and Mr. John Winey being the
leader ol tbe clans. An invitation was then
given by the President of the meeting for

The President, Mr. Weimer, then pro
ceeded to deliver an elaborate and Instruc
tive speech, biographical of the life and
career of James A. Uarfleld. The same
waa followed by muaic Sweet Rest In
Heaven.'

magnanimoua personage, who so ardently
aurmonnted tbe -JiffieuIUes incident to a life
from poverty and obscurity to honorable
poettion. That truly great man was en
gaged la tbe accomplishment of a great
miasion. He was a man that won tbe ad
miration of the world a pillar, supporting
tbe fabric of our National Government a
paciBcator, ever trying to qnell dissentiona,
restore and preserve peace and harmony.
If we consider bis past life, unimpeachable,
aa it adorns the annala of American history t
tf we view the rays of a bright future ; IX
we think bow dearly be loved bis family,
and how deeply he waa interested in tbe
welfare of our glorious j Repnblic, we are
caused to experience doleful sensations to
think that tbe essaaain'a bullet should end
so brilliant a career. His early life is char
acteristic, of many wonderful instances. He
enjoyed paternal care but mo years ; but,
thank God, young Garfield bad mother
devoted to moral and religloua principles

Tax 1th annual re-union of Juniata sol
diers of the Iste war against alavery took
place last Thursday, and was a demon stra
lion that cheered tbe aoula of the veterans
and bronght several thousand people to town
to witness the marching, counter-marching,
and listen to the 'patriotic songs, speeches
and reminiscences aa prepared far tbe oc
casion. Tbe crowd of visitors is estimated
by many aa the largea that has assembled
in this place. Members of the G. A. R.
Post of Mittlin county attended in a body,
accompanied by the McVeytowri band.
The Port RoTal band was present, and tbe
Post band in this place waa a participant in
all of tbe ceremonies where muaic waa re
quired. The orphans from the school at
McAlisterville were in attendance. The
procession was quite a sight to see. Tbe
Post of this place carried muskets. Tbe
ceremony tn tbe Court House yard consist
ed iu the singing of patriotic songs. A
speech of welcome by tiuorge Jacobs, Jr.
Tbe speech was a good one. Jacobs bas
an earnest manner of delivery, which im
presses itself upon an audience. An ad
dress by General Jsmes A. Beaver, of Belle-
fonte. Tbe addreaa waa quite entertaining.

pany. Jamet Wright, born in this place, son of
John Wright, Ueceaeed, was in town on last
Tbursdsy and Friday. He ia in buaineaa in
Curweosvllle. His friend, Edward Thomp
son, from the last-named place, accompan
ied bim.
Visitors returning from abroad, aa well aa
recent emigrants, will And Arer's Sarsspa.

Huntingdon Presbytery met last week, in
Spruce Creek church. In the matter of
dispute between the Presbyterian congre
gation of Mifflintown and Lost Creek, tbe
committee that waa appointed to come here
and compromise tbe trouble were instructed
to return and make another effort at com
promise. Last Tbursdsy C. B. Homing and George
Smith shipped the first boat load ol ties
cut from tbe tract of land that they recent
ly bought ol George Jacobs, Sr. Tbey
have a contract to furnish a large number
of railroad ties. Tbe boat that left on
Tuarsday with the first installment carried
aeven hundred.
