one more victim of the confidence men in
that city. Shortly alter 1 o'clock that af
ternoon a young man of rural appsarance
dropped into the Mayor's ollice aad stated
that he had been robbed of $ld by s couple
of sharpers a short time before. Us told
the loltowing story ot rural simplicity and a
dearly purchased experience : His name is
E. A. Walters. He was on his way from
Altooua to Lvon. Ohio, and while silling
in the car at the I'nion depot a couple d j
men sprang upon him the Id and much
worn check game. The two men stood
ne.r the seat occupied by him and were

which one had sold tho other. The pre
sumed purchaser in payment a check for
S7C3. The other did not have sufficient
cash to py the difference, and the holder
turned to Walters and asked him if he could
not use the check. Walters, with the green
ness so characteristic of the rustic, pulled
his roll containing $40 out of his pocket
aud said that that wis all he had. One of
the men grabbed the money with the n mark,
-That will help me out. You sit still and
I will be back in . minute." With that be
disappeared. Walters said he attempted to
follow the man but lost him in the crowd,

township, Ferry coonty, a few days age.

eye closely on the men who seem to oe dis
posed to help secure eight to ten Republi

There is a sensation over the death of
Darbt Long in l.ehauoti comity. He was
poor, but when he dt-d a few days ago, a

the benefit of strangers. His body is to be
raised aud examined for poison.
A lew days ago, J. B. Fry drilled a hole
five feet deep iu a limestone rock in a quar
ry owned by George Smith in Delaware
township. Three pounds of powder were
put iulo the hole, aud when touched off
enough stone were blown out to make 1,000
bushels of lime.
An infernal machine was put in a drawer
in the office of Robert A. Parrish, a Phia
d 'fphia lawyer, and instead of the lawyer

wise. It is said that where Democratic meetings
have been bed in this State this season,

A man with a large collection .f photo
graphs in a huge frame on which they could
be seen at one sight, sold the pictures at so
much a piece, under the grand stand dur
ing lair time last week. To iuduce people
to buy be stated that certain of the pictures
were numbered, and whatever they were
numbered, whether it be 25 cents, od cents
or 100 cents, the person who would select
such a one should be entitled to the amount
marked on the bck. It was a game of
chance, and many a boy invested and lost.
Finally a boy found the way behind the
frame, awl learned what pictures were num
bered, and from that time till the Ukk was
found out by the picture man, the boys
made money pretty fast. When the boy
understood the game there was no chance
about it.
