Oh 1 the wonderful songs that never are snng With words for an outward token j But go singing themselves for aye in tbe soul la a language that never is spoken. Sougs thu are sweeter than poets e'er penntd All their power aud their beauty excelling ( With a melody purer and tenderer far Thin the notes that their numbers are swelling. Songs evey true lover sings to his love, born of his deep-hidden feeling Such as sing thrmselves low in the pure maiden's breast. For fear of an outward revealiug. Songs that the mother-heart sings to the babe In peace on her bosom reclining That give spirit voice to her hopes and her fears, Tender beyond all defining. Wild, thrilling songs, that awake every chord When the soul is exultant with gladness ; That sigh through its chambers like voices of night When they utter its burden and sadness That breathe through the spirit with soft whispering notes, Like winds over June roses sighing, When ptssion is stilled and peace reigns within, And the heart bushed and tranquil is lying. Such songs are sung through all the wide world, 4nd nevsr once known are the singers ; But their music is echoed from heart unto heart, . And its sweetness and power ever lingers; And but for the singing ol such voiceless songs, In souls tilled with hoping and longing. Oh I dreary indeed would be the dark road Earth's children are hurriedly thronging. For many the poets whose numbers are formed In tbe unwritten language of spirit, While few are Die ones who id words the lips frame The power to express them inherit ; And rare is the voice that is perfectly tuned When words are tbe outward tpken, But never a soul but can sweet music make In the language that never is spoken. W S. Ru!f,k, im Bottom Trmucriyt. The old-fashicned church congregational meetings recognised tbe social requirements of people to a Urge degree. The congre gation would assemble at the place of wor ship an hour to an hour and a half before meeting time, and in that way had opportu nity to satisfy their social desires. Now, in this day and generation, people hurry to the church at tna moment appointed to preach, and, when preaching is over, hurry away ; aud in that way entirely ignore tbe social qualities of tneir natures. People will have more or less of social enjoyment, hence the S abhath-school celebration, the pic-nic, and kindred assemblies or meetings that act only as so many agencies to gratify tbe social qualities of people. If a social intercourse of an hour cr an hour and a half could be had either before or after ser vice every Sabbath, there would be few cel ebrations and pic-nics among church mem bers.
