cause it sent troops to the threatened local

Huntingdon has a romance, in the mar
riage of one of her citizens to a Southern
lady who cared for a Huntingdon man
when he lay wounded, at the house of the
bride's father, during the war. The care
extended by the Southern family to the
wounded Union soldier, obtained a guard
for their property during the occupancy of
that strip of country in which they lived.
Snyder is the name of the Huntingdon man.
About 2 o'clock on Wednesday morning,
the 21st inst, a fire broke out in the tramps'
room in the jail. A solitary tramp occupied
the room. The fire kindled overhead, from
the stove-pipe, while he slept. Smoke,
name and dreadful heat aroused him and
caused him to shout as only a man who is
confined in a p rlson-room can shout when
tire threatens bim with its tortures. The
tramp's cry was caught np by other inmates
of the prison, and thence the thrilling cry
of Fire ! Fire ! got out into the streets.
The bell on the Lutheran church was rung,
until the alarm had aroused a sufficient
number of citizens to insure the extinguish
ment of the fire. Many citizens did not
hear the alarm. It was a narrow1 escape
from destruction for the jail. Its loss
would have been greatly felt, by the tax
payers, for to rebuild would require a large
additional indebtedness.
