How many men and boys have con eluded to catch the bass that swim about the piers of the river bridge, in the first lawful hour to catch bass; but alas ! for their expectations, lie fore the time arrives in which they dare angle for the aforesaid fish, the young bass, over which they now hold guardianship, will be large enough to swim away from the spawning place, and of course the guardians will de sport themselves in other places. There is this consolation in the mat ter, tho game cannot get out of the river. Last Friday, a short distance below Millerstown, Perry county, on the railroad side of the river, three col ored boys went to the river to bathe The children were aged 5, 10 and 13 years. The two older boys undress ed and entered the river. The five-year-old boy 6at on the shore, and saw his two companions Rink out of sight under water. He sat still and waited for their re-appearance. By and by his mother called him. Re sponding to the call, by going to the house, he was asked for the where abouts of bis companions, when he stated that about s half hour ago they had " dived down in the river, and hadn't come up yet," and that, coupled with the fact that an hour and a half of search in the water found the two colored boys drowned, is all that is known of their seeming ly untimely taking off or drowning. Fisa stories, without number, may oe picited up any day, anywhere, bat a fish story with a goose in it ia a new thing, and then when it is a fact. it is no story, and is all the better for being true. Among the many men who took a minute or two of time as they crossed the river bridge to look at the female bass, at the third pier, making their ceaseless rounds of watching their young fish, was As sembly Garman, and while he stood looking at the fish) a goose, one of a flock of geese that Were swimming about at that part of the river swam over the spot where the young bass lay. The mother of the ppawn be came greatly excited, and made a number of rapid circles around the goose, which seemed to be utterly unconscious of the agitation she was creating in the fish world below. Finally, after all efforts to attract the attention of the goose had failed, the game fish shot rapidly forward and seized hold of A foot of the fowl. That was enough to start the goose ; it gave out a shrill, sharp cry of sur prise and distress, flapped its wings and left that part of the river as speedily as it could, and all the other geese in the vicinity followed it in great haste and alarm. Garman has not been sworn, does not wish to be, his plain say so makes it a true story, and when he gets back to Harrisburg next winter, there will be no fellow- member there with as true and good a 6tory as his. s Last Wednesday evening the Misses Pattent, and Mr. Vandyke, Jr., of Centre, were coming to this town quite pleasantly in a carriage. The horse dashed away to the creek bordering the town of Mexico, and after traversing it gome distance was caught. The peo ple were not seriously hurt. The carriage is a complete wreck.
