The opinion of the world is, that If Rus
sia and Turkey come to blows, Turkey will
be knocked to pieces. The piece-making
is a probl :in, which the end of the war will
demonstrate. When the late war between
Germany and France Was begun, all the war
maps were constructed on German terri
tory, in anticipation of France marching
through that country. It was not deemed
probable that Germany would march through
F ranee, and yet such proved to be the case,
and 1h first maps issued were of no nse in
following op the movements of the armies.
.
la leaving town on Saturday morning,
Forepaugh's showmen got badly scattered
and demoralized. One wagon went to Boil
ing Springs, about five miles out ol their
way ; another in attempting to turn out of
the Baltimore pike upset at the railroad and
broke tha wagon sufficiently to release the
birds it contained from captivity, but they
were all promptly recaptured. Another
wagon, crossing the bridge below town, up
set and fill ft of fh lion, it rantaimj
caped into the woods, but a short chase re
stored the animal to its cage, the showmen
capturing and handling it aa afarmei would
a bog. Car title Mirror.
A cowardly fellow, whose proper level
will only be reached when he has been
lodged in a prison bonse, took the hohiiug
back straps off of the harness of a horse
that was hitched to s buirgy in which a cit
ilea of this place intended to drive in, an
eveniug or two ago. The stolen piece of
harness was missed about the time the drive
was to take place, and tlias an accident
that might have resuUed in the loss ot life
wea prevented. The man who will do such
things is a thief and murderer, and all that
is needed to devclope hi'u is time and cir
cumstances.
Toe monthly report of the Govern,
tneut Department of Agriculture speaks
of this year's yield of wheat, in the
October number as follows : Our Octo
ber returns indicate a reduction in the
yield of the wheat crop of nearly one
sixtb, while the quality is somewhat
superior. Moreaccttiwte statistics may
possibly be given after the results of
threshing are more fully known. Every
section of the Union indicates a re
duced product except the Middle States,
which increased about 2 percent. The
New England States fell oS 4 per cent. ;
the South Atlantic States 2 per cent. ;
the Gulf States 27 per cent. ; the South
ern inland States 8 per cent. ; the
States north of the Ohio river 14 per
cent.; the States west of tbe Missis
sippi river 27 per cent. ; tbe Pacific
States nearly 2 per cent. These figures
point to a yield of tbout 245,000,000
bushels. This, however, will be the
subject of further examination and in-
qatry in our November returns.
In Washington, Pa., a doctor Moyoe
has built a iurnace for the purpose of
toarntng the bodies of dead people in
stead ut burying them in the ground.
A few days ago he experiuieuted on tbe
bodies of sheep, au accouut of which is
taken Irom the Washington, Pa , Even
ing Reporter, and reads as follows :
We learo that tbe next morning after
the cremation of tbe sheep in Dr.
Moyne'a furnace, an account of which
was given in this paper yesterday, tbe
retort was still red hot and continued
so for a long time. This morning, about
thirty six tiour. after tbe furnace bad
been closed, it bad cooled off sufficient
ly and the iron door which closed it
was removed in the presence of tbe
Doctor and a few friends. Nothing re-n-ained
i f tbe bodies and the coffin but
about a gallon of dry dust ashes, and
cremation in tie furnace was pro
nonnced a grand success. When they
were placed in tbe furnace tbe bodies
of the two sheep weighed 1C2 pounds,
and the box or coffin 04 pounds, making
total weight of 22t pounds, which
was completely reduced to ashes, in
bulk that would not more than 11 a
gallon measure.
The Millerstown Ledger says . The
belief that ooal exists in Perry county
is being veiified gradually. This time
in Little Cove mountain. Two men, J.
S. Foose, of Duncannon, and illiam
Fields, of Ilarrisbarg, hae leased land
from Messrs. liell aud Zimmerman, on
the above uiouutaio, in Peon township,
and have, for some time past, been dig
ging for tbe black diamonds. A shaft
was suuk on the top of the mountain,
and a vein of coal about two inches
thick was fouud, a few feet more was
excavated when a larger vein was found,
but water drowned out the workmen.
Another shaft was sunk further down
tbe mountain, but tbe same difficulty
presented itself, and, as a last resort,
they went down the mountain and ran
in what is called a money-drift finding
coal in large quantities. As yet, they
bave not succeeded in getting out coal
in paying quantities, but bave a vein
four feet in thickness. We saw a speci
men of the coal on Monday morning.
It looks very much like W ilkesbarre
coal, but is said to possess excellent
gas qualities. A large vein of sulphur
has also been dijeovered. We trust
that these gentlemen will be successful
in tbe discovery of coal in paying quan
tities. The drift is about eight hun
dred yards from tbe Pennsylvania rail
road. Rev. Dr. Webber occupied tbe pul
pit of the Second Presbyterian Church
at Troy, N. JT., Sunday, a week and
among his illustrations was tbe follow
ing : "On my visiting list is the family
of a cripple, who supports bis wife and
little ones by making sbn.s. Not many
weeks ago I called upon them, and
found that in addition to the affliction
resulting from tbe loss of bis lower
limbs, tbe husband and father bad be
come blind. Poverty stared the little
family in the face, but even then 1
beard no word of complaint from h'.m.
On the contrary, be made an effort to
be cheerful. At a subsequent visit I
found tbe man at work again, and when
I entered bis shop be exclaimed, "1
bave news for you, sir ; I bave good
new. Last week I recovered my sight
a little, sod bj feeling I made pair
of shoes. I got $3 for them, which
paid the rent, snd thank God, we don't
owe a eent We are prosperous ; we
re prosperous, sir." I went away as
ashamed of myself, feeling that this poor
.;r,rU au the onlv person I bad heard
gay be vu prosperous the last twelve
months. Prosperous on win,

Thk Couossai Baoazc Statcc or Vic
tokt which stands in the Park, at Lowell,
before tbe tomb of the first soldiers that
fell in tbe revolution, is a lasting and beau
tiful tribute of art. It is one of the 3rst
objects sought by strangers visiting our sis

to see this elegant object of high art. It
was obtained from the Eing of Bavaria by
Dr. J. C. Ayer, to whom his majesty was
especially gracious in acknowledgment of
what his remedies are reputed to hate done
for the suffering sick. It was donated by
tbe Doctor to the City of Lowell as a per

Mi W. H. Wolt, of thia city, was out

a lonely place in the woods came across two
horses that were bridled and tied to trees.
He passed on, and bad not gone a great dis

of the bullets perforating his hat, while at
the same time an individual who had been
concealed near the horses stepped out, and
demanded the money and valuables of Mr.

at the villain, the b ill taking effect ia tbe

color, with the gloss and freshness of
youth. Thin hair is thickened, fall
ing hair checked, and baldness often,
though not always, cured by its
nse. Nothing can restore the hair
where the follicles are destroyed, or
the glands atrophied and decayed ;
but such aa remain can be saved by
this application, and stimulated into
activity, so that a new growth of
hair is produced. Instead of fouling
the hair with a pasty sediment, it
will keep it clean and vigorous. Its
occasional use will present the hair
from turning gray or falling off,
and consequently prevent baldness.
The restoration of vitality it gives
to the scalp arrests and prevents
the formation of dandruff, which is
often so uncleanly and offensive.
Free from those deleterious sub
stances which make some prepara
tions dangerous, and injurious to the
hair, the Vigor can only benefit, but
not harm it If wanted merely for
a HAIR DRESSING, nothing else
can be found so desirable. Contain
ing neither oil nor dye, it does not
soil white cambric, and yet lasts
long on the hair, giving it a rich,
glossy lustre, and a grateful perfume.
