Jin Interesting Lttlle Story.
Tbe following story of Governor Hayes
was loid at a Republican meeting recently
held iu Cleveland :
At South Mountain the boys of the Twenty-third
Laving appropriated two stacks of
straw for use in their dire distress, the
General iu command rode np to tbe reg i

li. Hayes, then Lieutenant-Colonel, relied -.
"My boys have neilher tents, blankets, nor
overcoats. The mud is ankle deep, and
lite loss of tbe straw will cost more in qui
nine to the government, to say nothing of
the suffering of the regiment, than ten
limes its value, and if the government will
not pay for it I will." And R. B. Hayes
paid for that straw out of his own pocket.
